Terrace Houses
Sirince, near Ephesus, Turkey
Facilities
- All 3 cottages have A/C in the main bedroom (at least), a
CD-radio with a few discs, hot water (electric in Grapevine, solar
in the other 2 – we're assured this is sufficient even in
winter), oil or electric-panel heating, wood-burning stove or fire,
and spare blankets (including an electric one)
- All have kitchens of some sort: Fig has a basic kitchenette,
Grapevine has a decently-equipped kitchen-diner, Olive has a
winter-only kitchen (in the summer, when it's used for the terrace
café, guests get a kettle and cafetiere)
- All have sitting rooms with hearth and some form of outdoor
dining area
- Throughout, you'll find pretty decorative touches: Iznik-blue
ceramic crockery, marble basins, a niche full of old bread stamps
and vases
- In summer, the terrace café offers breakfast, dinner (by
arrangement) and snacks - combined with wonderful views over the
town
- There is ADSL internet connection in all 3 houses, and if you
ask nicely you can usually borrow their laptop
- They can arrange transfers from Izmir or Selcuk, laundry to be washed, cooking lessons in the village
When to go?
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal for,
respectively, wild flowers and leafy hillsides, and warm seas
without the crowds. Summer is also quite pleasant up here (500m
altitude), though you do get more day trippers. And don't rule out
winter: all houses have heating, and Olive in particular would make
a cosy couples' bolthole.
If you do come in winter, try and coincide with the January
camel wrestling competition (no kidding) in Ephesus' ancient
theatre: after processing through Selcuk to musical accompaniment,
pairs of ceremonially decorated male camels wrestle for a female in
heat! If you want to know how they win, see our Local Info.
