Winner of the Bed & Breakfast of the Year, Northwest Regional Development Agency Tourism Awards 2009

The Guardian, December 2009
"A respectable newspaper recently compared entering this B&B with "interrupting a séance". Made me hoot. If you don't like fashionably dark paintwork then, yes, skip this entry, but my first impression was an interior soothing, stylish and packed with personality. Then I went to my bedroom, which had a Hypnos mattress, Ren toiletries, monsoon shower, beautiful linen and incredible attention to detail. "Landlady" James Gray has raised the bar by a mile this year, creating a "destination B&B". In other words, I'd revisit Lancaster for The Ashton, not the other way round."

The Times, December 2009
"An eccentric hotel with a limited menu, but enchanting nonetheless."

The Guardian, March 2009
"It's a theatre set of smoky colours and mood lighting...spacious, modern, tactile - bathrobes, padded suede headboards, luxurious silk quilts."

  • “A genuinely fantastic place, and a great experience per se: James is wonderfully friendly and helpful, and the hotel's attention to detail, charm and overall ambiance is hard to fault. Highly recommended.”
    Carsten, United Kingdom (03.01.11)

  • “We stayed at the Ashton to break our journey traveling from Scotland to London. It was very convenient for the M6, and it was just as good as we had hoped it would be. It's a lovely old house that has been really tastefully decorated. The room was extremely comfortable and great attention had been paid to detail. Both the evening meal and the breakfast were superb. There was really nothing we could fault. The owner, James, was pleasant and despite being very busy the level of service provided was excellent in all respects.”
    Isabelle, United Kingdom (29.12.10)

  • “Our room was a bit dark (it was difficult to read) but we had a wonderful stay. James is a fantastic host with superb food. We would highly recommend The Ashton”

Save to favouritesPrintMailThe AshtonAn unusual place in an unlikely location. If the inside of this handsome Georgian house looks like the set of "Lost in Austen" (with a dash of 21st-century flair), it’s no coincidence: owner James was the set decorator on the ITV period drama. Theatrical this hotel certainly is, with dramatic colour schemes, beautiful lighting and top-notch bathrooms and bedlinen. Enjoy the house party atmosphere and original art in the candlelit lobby and dining room, or retreat upstairs to your [r:UK056:room] and revel in space and luxury. While the house is old (1834 to be precise), furnishings are strictly contemporary, with clean lines and sensuous silks and suedes, and the odd antique chair judiciously thrown in for fun. As well being as the artistic talent behind this gem, James is the perfect host, a great cook and ever attentive to the details that make this a really special place. Swathed in 3/4 acre of grounds, the Ashton feels both isolated and ideally located: 5 minutes from the centre of Lancaster, great countryside and the M6. The perfect stopover.
