The Bale
Nusa Dua (South Coast), Bali
Hip, modern, minimalist hotel and spa with 29 individual pavilions and private infinity pools set on a hillside in Nusa Dua area
The Bale brings to mind the phrase "live like a king". Walk up its
vast sweeping steps, passed endless bleached limestone and central
cascading waterfall and you're in a modern, minimalist palace.
Architect Antony Liu has applied his clean cut palette on an
impressive scale.
Set on a sea-facing hillside in the upmarket enclave of Nusa Dua,
on the southern Bukit Peninsula, its 29 individual
pavilions are cutting-edge contemporary design. Walk into
the bathroom and you could find yourself drifting down into your
own infinity swimming pool. Each pavilion has its own small garden,
with daybed the size of a small house. What's clever is how they've
combined the seclusion of private walled enclosures without losing
a sense of open space. You can look out, nobody looks in. Your own
butler checks you in and will sort out any trips you need. With
armies of staff, ultra style, 2 funky restaurants and fabulous spa,
they don't come more luxurious than this.

Highs
- Fully refurbed in early 2012, to honour their 10th anniversary. The striking minimalist design is a complete contrast to the usual Balinese decor
- High-style, ultra private pavilions, all with own infinity pools - some of the most seductive rooms on the island that make you think twice about bothering to leave
- Soothing atmosphere and total luxury, including highly personalised service and exceptional housekeeping
- Spa with inspired series of masterclasses hosted by well-known teachers and healers (from yoga and meditation to Shiatsu and Chinese medicine).
- Imaginative, tasty food served in 2 restaurants or your own villa, plus excellent cocktails
- Just a 20-minute drive from the airport
Lows
- Cut off from the outside world - ideal for those wanting to cocoon themselves but if you want shops, bars and restaurants, you will need to take a taxi (30 minutes to trendy Seminyak)
- The many steps may prove tricky for those with mobility problems though you can get a lift in a buggy
- No direct beach access - most guests tend to stay put at the hotel though it's just a couple of minutes' drive to the hotel's beach club
- Limited sea views but the hotel's a spectacle itself
- Not for those seeking a traditional Balinese experience
- It's created for couples and adults (no children under 16), so families should look elsewhere
