The Beach House

Tangalle, Sri Lanka

For those who know they've earned it, a private, fully staffed villa with its own stretch of tropical beach (sleeps 10)

A once-in-a-lifetime holiday treat for all but the most decadent, this idyllic villa lies among coconut palms on its own stretch of white beach near Tangalle on the south coast. The Beach House was once the tropical retreat of American artist Douglas Johnson, who lovingly restored the Dutch colonial bungalow with the help of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's most renowned architect.

Dark wooden colonial furniture is offset against a white colonaded veranda and cushions in muted greys, blues and creams. Artistic details – shell mosaic mirrors, Johnson's collection of pictures and collages and quirky ornaments – make it homely and inviting. With four double bedrooms and a twin, the villa sleeps 10 in style.

The Beach House attracts its fair share of celebrity holidaymakers, but it's still well within the reach of those serious about spoiling themselves. It's perfect for spending days lazing by the beach and, if you get itchy feet, you can venture out to see temples, wildlife and historic towns.

Highs

  • The Beach House is just a hop, skip and jump to the Indian Ocean and the virtually private swimming beach is one of Sri Lanka's finest
  • You'll find exclusivity, ultimate privacy and staff to cater to your every need
  • The verdant tropical gardens are filled with frangipani trees and swaying palms
  • The food mixes fresh seafood, Sri Lankan spices and Western influences, with delicious results

Lows

  • The water pressure is somewhat poor, so power-shower lovers should look elsewhere
  • The Beach House is not sign-posted and is a bit difficult to find, but that's the price you pay for supreme privacy
  • The house and gardens are prone to insect visitors, particularly red ants, so take plenty of repellent
