The Elephant House

Addo, Garden Route, South Africa

Eating

As the African sky turns from bright blue to orange to lilac to ultramarine, the staff quietly bring the dining tables out and set them down around the pond or under the eaves. Sundowners are served in the wraparound veranda, candles and lamps are lit, stories are exchanged, and then the palpitating sound of a beating drum signals that dinner is served.

Cooled by some delicious sparkling wine from an ice bucket, we tucked into freshly caught steenbras (fish), herb-laden chicken with wild rice and crunchy-grilled courgettes and carrots. A light fruit and ice-cream bowl filled up any gaps, and a port made sure it was all digested properly. For each of the 3 courses, we had a choice of 2 or 3 dishes, and the chance to specify dietary requirements beforehand, or to opt for a lighter meal after the sundowner trip (see Activities). Although dinner is not obligatory, there is nowhere much else to eat, and no reason to eat elsewhere: see Rates for its excellent value.

Breakfast, which is included in the room price, includes toast and jams, fresh fruit and yoghurt, juices, cereals and an excellent cooked breakfast. For lunch you can order a picnic to take with you, have sandwiches at the lodge, or make your own arrangements.

Save to favouritesPrintMailThe Elephant HouseHow did the elephant get his trunk? Well, my dear, it’s a long story, but if you spend a night at The Elephant House deep in the South African savannah, then you might find the answer in an envelope on your pillow. And, next day, you can see a real elephant and judge for yourself… The Elephant House is a country lodge which reveals its charm slowly. At first sight, it’s nothing more than a thatched building behind ochre walls, just off the dusty road to Addo Elephant National Park. Step inside and you will discover 2 unexpected grassy courtyards and a couple of swimming pools. Open your bedroom door and the elegant, air-conditioned spaciousness is a welcome relief. Come nightfall and the place is transformed into a magical outdoor banquet hall, with lamplit tables set beneath fiery orange-blue skies, and smiling staff to ply you with food and wine. Finally, as you lift the mosquito net to hop into bed, a bedtime story left on your pillow with a chocolate seals a perfect evening.
