The Elephant House

Addo, Garden Route, South Africa

Rooms

The 8 colonially styled bedrooms are spread across the thatched, U-shaped wings around the original courtyard and separate buildings beside the main house. All rooms are comfortable and spacious, with queensize or twin beds, soft sheets and duvets, mosquito nets and plump pillows. The ensuite bathrooms are large, mostly with a shower and his-and-hers washbasins; 1 room also has a private outdoor shower. Furnishings are both tasteful and functional: old wooden dressers, wicker chests at the foot of the bed, brass lamps, watercolours of African scenery.

Best of all for this continental climate, the rooms are air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter. There is also a telephone and IT port, but no TV or radio (except in the lounge). All rooms have a steeply-pitched, beamed / thatched ceiling; the upstairs room also has a balcony with bamboo trellis.

If you’re looking for a bit more privacy, request either the Sydney Room, a free-standing, spacious suite with indoor sitting area and small walled court; or the Honeymoon Suite, a separate thatched cottage across the lawn, though also nearer the road.

Save to favouritesPrintMailThe Elephant HouseHow did the elephant get his trunk? Well, my dear, it’s a long story, but if you spend a night at The Elephant House deep in the South African savannah, then you might find the answer in an envelope on your pillow. And, next day, you can see a real elephant and judge for yourself… The Elephant House is a country lodge which reveals its charm slowly. At first sight, it’s nothing more than a thatched building behind ochre walls, just off the dusty road to Addo Elephant National Park. Step inside and you will discover 2 unexpected grassy courtyards and a couple of swimming pools. Open your bedroom door and the elegant, air-conditioned spaciousness is a welcome relief. Come nightfall and the place is transformed into a magical outdoor banquet hall, with lamplit tables set beneath fiery orange-blue skies, and smiling staff to ply you with food and wine. Finally, as you lift the mosquito net to hop into bed, a bedtime story left on your pillow with a chocolate seals a perfect evening.
