The Elephant House
Addo, Garden Route, South Africa
Rooms
The 8 colonially styled bedrooms are spread across the
thatched, U-shaped wings around the original courtyard and separate
buildings beside the main house. All rooms are comfortable and
spacious, with queensize or twin beds, soft sheets and duvets,
mosquito nets and plump pillows. The ensuite bathrooms are large,
mostly with a shower and his-and-hers washbasins; 1 room also has a
private outdoor shower. Furnishings are both tasteful and
functional: old wooden dressers, wicker chests at the foot of the
bed, brass lamps, watercolours of African scenery.
Best of all for this continental climate, the rooms are
air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter. There is also a
telephone and IT port, but no TV or radio (except in the lounge).
All rooms have a steeply-pitched, beamed / thatched ceiling; the
upstairs room also has a balcony with bamboo trellis.
If you’re looking for a bit more privacy, request either the
Sydney Room, a free-standing, spacious suite with indoor
sitting area and small walled court; or the Honeymoon Suite,
a separate thatched cottage across the lawn, though also nearer the
road.
