The Gurnards Head
Zennor, Cornwall
A characterful pub with comfy rooms, delicious food and a knockout location on Cornwall's World-Heritage north coast
You can’t miss this place - a tangerine coloured building
perched somewhat precariously on a bend in the road, its name
proudly emblazoned in white on the roof. Despite the brash
exterior, you'll feel yourself relax as soon as you walk through
the door. Laid back and low key, the bar looks like it’s been
here for years – but in a good way. An ad hoc
assortment of pine tables and chairs, stone floors, two log fires,
candles, books and newspapers all invite you to make yourself at
home. The adjacent dining room is renowned for its gourmet menu,
and whilst the colourful paintwork and swirly artex ceiling may
never win a design award, the
food
is so fabulous that you should leave any diet at home and
indulge.
Upstairs 7 simply furnished ensuite bedrooms make this a
great spot for a romantic weekend away, or for exploring the many
glorious coastal walks. Whichever you come for, it's a good place
to be: owner Charles Inkin and his friendly staff offer the same
cheery welcome and simple-things-done-well philosophy as at their
sister pub, Felin Fach Griffin.

Highs
- The untamed coastal setting, which quickly works its restorative magic
- Relaxing at the bar, where locals and visitors mingle in good spirits over well-priced ales
- The fabulous dinners, sourced from predominantly local suppliers
- A technology-free zone– unreliable mobile reception means it’s very peaceful
- An understyled and unpretentious interior - a welcome relief after so many homogenized designer hotels
Lows
- The bathrooms could do with updating, but are clean and functional; only room 7 has a bath, so request this when booking if it's important to you
- Dogs are welcome in all bedrooms and the dining room: if you are allergic, then this may be an issue
- Be sure to avoid the herd of local cows meandering to the milking shed if you want to catch your return train. Alternatively, it’s a great excuse to stay an extra day
It is immediately apparent that this is a good place to be...
