REVIEWS

Condé Nast Traveller
"The Peech Hotel is Johannesburg's chicest boutique hotel. Situated... in Melrose it offers sixteen bedrooms and suites, a Bistro restaurant with champagne bar and a boardroom and events space. The boutique hotel is swish and sexy, the ideal hangout for trendy travellers in the hunt for no-frills contemporary style."

Frommer's
"This fabulous little 'hotel', set in a tree-filled, upscale neighborhood, was opened in early 2005 by James Peech, a young creative type from Yorkshire. Swish and sexy... The emphasis is on in-room comfort (king-size beds, soft white linen, ultra-comfortable mattresses); animal-hide rugs decorate the wooden floors, and large bathrooms with 'raindance' showers are a genuine treat. The two guest rooms (ask for room no. 1 or 2) above the lobby are the best in terms of size, while the four garden units have either a small terrace or direct access to the lawn. Wholesome breakfasts and all-day deli-style meals are served in a small open-air dining area, but you're encouraged to go out at night to make your acquaintance with one of the fine restaurants in the area, followed by a visit to a good club (staff will happily arrange transport)."

Elle
"An unexpected city oasis. It's complete with luscious lawn, pool for water babies and conference facilities for the business minded.... With its simple design and contemporary decor, there is a feeling of tranquility about this boutique hotel and Joburg's bustle quickly evaporates."

  • “The general calm feeling of the whole compound with proactive staff who went out of their way to assist. Only overnighted there so didn’t move from the hotel – no need to. Overall value was very good indeed.”

Save to favouritesPrintMailThe PeechIn a quiet backstreet of Melrose, wrapped around by a mature, high-walled garden, this small boutique hotel offers guests a safe, comfortable and immensely stylish haven well away from the cut and thrust of the city centre. James Peech completely gutted then refurbished this 1950s house and built 2 additional garden annexes to create one of the city’s coolest retreats, which happily marries the best of contemporary design with a big splash of afro-ethnic attitude. A predominantly beige and white colour scheme provides a quiet backdrop for immensely colourful furnishings and fabrics. Suede sofas and pouffes in cool blue and tangerine, pinky-orange table cloths and shiny cérise bar stools sit alongside more ethnic elements like carved ebony tables, besbok and antelope skin rugs and kuba cloth wall hangings. The Peech’s 16 stylish and airy [r:SA013:bedrooms] have every mod-con, the bistro restaurant is the talk of the town, there’s a rotating exhibition of paintings and photography, and the hotel is imbued by the easy, open nature of its young owners.
