The Rockwell

Kensington, London

Designer decor, fabulous food and a quiet sunny garden in the heart of popular Kensington

There are no tea-making facilities in the rooms, but that's the only thing we didn't like about The Rockwell. We loved the high ceilings and vast windows, the designer décor and friendly staff; and we adored the peaceful garden, which felt a million miles from central London. Once two Victorian town-houses, then a budget hotel, it underwent a £8.5m refurbishment to become the stylish haven it is today. Outside it may look like its residential neighbours, but step into the cool lobby and you're instantly blown away. Bold geometric wallpaper, cosy armchairs, Diptyque candles, a guest library - it's impeccably smart yet totally relaxing.

This chic-and-cheerful concept spreads throughout the 40 bedrooms (top-notch furnishings and big comfy beds), as well as the restaurant (simple ingredients cooked to perfection) and the garden (peace, vast flowerpots and evening sun; ideal for a 6pm G&T). We think The Rockwell is destined for big things: it's easy on the eye, it's unpretentious and it's a 5-minute walk from Earl's Court tube so couldn't be easier to get to. Oh, and room service offers tea 24 hours a day.

Highs

  • The blend of original Victorian features (mosaic floors, stone stairs) and ultra-modern additions (Philippe Starck tables and Neisha Crosland wallpaper)
  • Within walking distance of the Natural History Museum, Hyde Park, the Royal Albert Hall and Harrods
  • Great value for money, considering its location and cutting-edge design, plus a 12pm check-out
  • Very good food, and you're within walking distance of some excellent restaurants on the Kings Road

Lows

  • It's situated on a busy main road, but the windows are triple glazed
  • There are no baths, although the pay-off is a power shower and White Company toiletries
  • You experience inter-room noise in some rooms, such as others guests' TVs
  • In the Mezzanine Suites, the upper floor is quite low (tall guests will feel cramped) and can get hot and stuffy

Proves that high style doesn't always come with a high price tag in London...
