The Teahouse
Essaouira, Morocco
Simple, intimate and atmospheric little guesthouse tucked away in the walled medina
Inside the old walled harbour town of Essaouira, close to the sea,
is The Teahouse, a beautifully restored Jewish merchant house.
Owners Alison, former editor for the Sunday Times Style magazine,
and Jandal, who runs a building and restoration business, have
lovingly converted this house into two very stylish apartments -
with kitchens, so you can self-cater too. Arranged on separate
floors round a central courtyard, each apartment
(sleeping up to 4) has 2 bedrooms each with an ensuite shower,
kitchen and living/dining room with open fire.
It's ideal for families, couples, solo travellers or a group of up
to 8 friends who can take over the whole place. Walk along miles of
windblown beaches and soak up the atmosphere in the local cafes.
Alison and Jandal are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful on what
to do and visit in Essaouira and the rest of Morocco; you may well
find yourself being based here for your whole trip.

Highs
- The morning light streaming into your private apartment
- Alison, who readily admits she loves to shop, will happily show you around and help you find some exquisite local bargains
- Much of the house is in its original condition
- Lovey antique spreads and cushions
- The roof terrace is a great place to have breakfast or a drink - fabulous sea views
Lows
- As all rooms open onto a central courtyard there is a certain lack of privacy and don't expect mod cons such as TVs or stereos
- The English eccentric feel to the place - basic bathrooms and mismatched cutlery - is not to everyone's taste
- Some reports of feline smells on roof terrace
- It can get quite chilly in winter (although there are fires and hot water bottles)
Popular with intellectuals, writers and film-makers...
