Rooms
The design of the suites (named Red, Blue and Yellow) makes
them feel open, clean, colourful and light. All have wonderfully
comfortable beds, coloured silk cushions, luxurious crisp linen and
cooling terracotta-tiled floors, as well as all the luxuries
you’d expect for such a contemporary space -
remote-controlled blinds and lighting, air conditioning, ceiling
fans, DVD and CD players, phones, TVs and minibars. Those in search
of authentic India be warned: the ultra-modern décor is
stunning, but it's more like Europe than the East.
The Red Suite is the biggest, with planter chairs to relax
in, and both it and the Blue Suite have lovely outdoor
bathroom-cum-garden areas. The Yellow Suite has a small
decking area, perfect for yoga or just to relax in, and a separate
basin/dressing room. All have marvellous outdoor sunken showers
surrounded by pebbles, with lovely light kimonos and wooden
slippers provided.
Quirky features make each suite different. The Yellow Suite has a
fantastic black and white photograph display of Kathakali dancers
putting on their makeup; the Blue Suite has a lovely antique
children’s car on its mezzanine. Original art by contemporary
Indian artists graces the walls of each room, and wooden artefacts
pepper the whole place. The Red and Blue Suites both have second
double beds on a small mezzanine - perfect if you have a
young child or you’re a group of friends together.
There are no views from any room, but the communal sitting and
dining room has views over Fort Cochin’s Parade Ground.
Light and airy, it also has comfortable chairs and a sofa in a deep
Buddha-orange, bookshelves and a table at the window from which to
enjoy the view. A dramatic black net hides the ugly building next
door and adds to the ultra-modern feel.
