Vilacampina

Algarve, Portugal

A boutique B&B in the countryside (but near fabulous beaches), with Moorish influences and a cool pool in peaceful gardens

There are sofas in the shade by the swimming pool, a big sweep of walled gardens, and coolly uncluttered whitewashed interiors that offer great value for money. You’re close to the beach yet away from the bustle of tourists. Freshly squeezed breakfast juice comes from orange groves in the estate across the lane, so wash down croissants and chocolate cake before heading out to island lagoons for miles of sand. If you can’t pull yourself away, then don’t. Vilacampina is a great spot to linger; wander through the garden to the pool, help yourself to a drink at the bar, soak up the sun on padded loungers or read in the shade of a parasol. Candle lanterns come out at night, when the palm-graced garden takes on a real feel of Arabian Nights.

Nine stylish (mostly big) rooms hit the spot and are great value for money. You get stone floors, whitewashed walls, super-comfy beds dressed in crisp white linen with Indian cotton bedspreads, and a splash of colour from red rugs and eyecatching contemporary art. Lighting, from appliqués and snazzy bedside lamps, is just right. Bathrooms are equally spoiling with walk-in power showers, bathrobes and slippers, and creamy limestone tiles. Spain is close, explore Tavira or take to the hills behind and escape the tourist hordes.

Highs

  • All the peace of the country, but you’re only 5km from the sea
  • The beaches nearby are fabulous - endless sands and no development (it's a Natural Park)
  • The pool is a great spot to laze in the sun
  • Sleek modern bedrooms have terrace or balcony, and a sense of space
  • Breakfast served on a smart decked terrace overlooking a small orchard of pear, fig and quince trees, the fruit of which is made into jams and jellies
  • Tavira is the prettiest town on the Algarve

Lows

  • No kitchen, and only snacks are available - you’ll have to drive out for dinner
  • It can get extremely hot in July and August
  • Beaches are not within short walking distance (closest is about 3km) but bikes can be borrowed to get you there

Far from the tourist crowds of the Algarve is a sleek oasis in an orange grove...
