Villa de L'O

Essaouira, Morocco

Press Reviews

Psychologies, March 2009
"A private riad inside Morocco's Essaouira medina has opened the delightful 12-roomed Villa de L'O. Moments from the beach the hotel is the perfect base for kite surfers (the season is almost upon us), while those wanting down time can borrow bikes from the hotel, enjoy aromatic massages, the pool and the hammam."

Telegraph, December 2008
"Newly opened Villa de l’O is well-placed for Place Moulay Hassan – Essaouira’s lively, café-lined square. This friendly, incense-fragranced riad has 12 colonial-chic themed bedrooms. Breakfast in the plant-filled internal courtyard is accompanied by the hotel’s love birds chirruping along to Vivaldi."

  • “Beautiful little hotel, Sophie and Miriam on reception were very helpful. Lovely roof terrace, though could do with a couple of umbrella's as extremely hot when we visited. Breakfast good though would have been nice with more variety. Service very good in all areas. Only reason we wouldn't return is they need to offer a small snack menu as sometimes you just want to relax, not have to leave for lunch/dinner in town, especially if you are not well, as happened to us.”

  • “We simply fell in love with Essaouira and Villa de L'O. The location is great, close to the main square inside the Medina and steps away from the beach. The decor is impressive, incredible mixture of carved wooden doors, columns and quirky contemporary pieces. The rooms are quite big but a little dark, and that's how it usually is in riads.
One of my personal favourites - the terrace with amazing views of the ocean. I am definitely going back!”

  • “We loved the location, having breakfast on the rooftop-terrace and the general old villa syle. Our room was a little smaller than expected and it was a shame to have so much new decoration.”

  • “If you have the time do visit Essaouira...& spoil yourself by staying @ this outstanding Riad!OK...we were lucky enough to be upgraded to the 'top of the range' Opium room....but our original choice of Opal looked great anyway.

Memories of enjoying outstanding breakfasts on the sunny terrace in late Jan will last for a long time!

The service provided by the staff @ L'O was most appreciated...they smile all the time and the calm, efficient & sensitive culture added much to the Riad experience. Guidance & suggestions where to eat out were excellent...these included a most enjoyable meal @ the Chalet de la Plage...& seek out Les Alizes for fascinating traditional Moroccan food.

If you like seafood, a lazy lunch @ the stalls by the port make for an interesting bargaining experience...just play hard to get...the 'end game' is worth it !

Above all...save up to visit L'O & Essaouria...it is something & somewhere special.”

  • “The customer care provided by the staff was amazing. We had log fires at night, and the view from our terrace and roof top room was stunning. Highly recommend it.”

  • “The roof terrace is amazing, as are the breakfasts you have up there. The Rooms are a little warm as no aircon..thats the only downside. Location is also great, and the owners are very sweet.”

  • “Food was great as was the hotel and the staff were really friendly.
We particularly disliked the massage, it was pretty awful, especially for the price. I would like to advise other i-escapers to avoid the service!”

  • “Loved the breakfast and the riad was amazing.

The room really needed aircon as it was so hot which is the only real complaint.”

  • “Absolutely fabulous. exquisite service, elegant atmosphere and luxurious surroundings. Villa de l'O lacks for nothing.”

  • “You can't fail to be impressed with the villa's interior, service, breakfast and location - it was better than we expected! We actually stayed in L'Occident and it was no smaller than a typical european hotel room and whilst it has no direct sunlight you can open the large french doors (it is homely enough to do this) and the windows. We would definitley go back. Only feedback would be that they provide too much jam at breakfast for two - I hate seeing waste!!”

  • “This is exactly as you describe it on the website so not a typical Moroccan Riad. It is beautifulso can't really be criticised. Pesronally I think we prefer the more traditional Moroccan Riads. We were unfortunately in the smallest room and as you say I would highly suggest not staying if that is the only room available. It was a bit pokey and got boiling hot.
Breakfasts were great and the roof terrace is a lovely place to chill and watch life going on down below.”

Save to favouritesPrintMailVilla de L'OHidden behind the medina walls, right by the sea, this onetime almond storage depot is minutes from everything lovely old Essaouira has to offer: idyllic white and pinkwashed houses, rolling dunes, harbour, fish stalls, souks. Yet despite its central location it is blissfully tranquil. The moment those huge bolted doors swing open to reveal an elegantly furnished 18th-century colonnaded patio and a cageful of chirruping birds, you know you've arrived at a rare place. Behind a grand sweep of curtain lies a delectable French salon; through intricately carved doors, a dining room with an intimate air. Follow French owners Celine or Caroline up tiered inner balconies to spoilingly comfortable, hugely handsome [r:MC045:bedrooms] and you’ll wish you'd booked for longer. And, bet your bottom dirham, after sipping a cocktail from a cool lounger on the shaded roof terrace, with views over ramparts, souks and kite surfers on the beach - you will quietly ask if you might stay an extra night or two…
