Villa de L'O
Essaouira, Morocco
Rooms
The immaculate, 2008-refurbished bedrooms are all different, yet
all have one thing in common: their names begin with an 'O'. They
also share a distinct colonial theme. Dark wood, sober colours and
elegant cane furniture are common to all; sepia photographs, globes
and vintage books tied with string add character, as do the stylish
golf clubs in L'Obe. Repro-style leather armchairs feature
in Odyssee, Moroccan lamps and lovely carved doors in
Onyx. The dark woods in Opium verge on black, giving
the room a boudoir-esque air.
Beds are turned down beautifully at night, your nightwear is folded
in fan shapes. Some beds have lush velvety covers in ivory and
coffee colours - L'Occident (the only twin room),
Opal - others are dressed in faux leopard skin or 'faded
chintz' from Ralph Lauren, or silky sabra with matching cushions
and blinds. Riad rooms were designed to be cool, but the children's
bedrooms on the mezzanines (in 2 rooms only) can get hot in summer.
Pay top whack for the L'Avel mOr penthouse and you get air
conditioning and a private slice of the terrace.
One room is on the dark side - L'Occident, which opens onto
the inner gallery - but high riad ceilings means it feels airy
enough. Most rooms have ceiling fans, and some have
fireplaces.
The bathrooms we saw were lovely, with bronze, ceramic or
hardwood basins and bowls of spices in which shampoos and body
lotions nestle; towels and bathrobes are suitably fluffy and sport
the l'O monogram. Half the rooms have showers, the other half baths
- including a copper tub in L'Orizon: see
