"Private garden with a pool. If you aren't already sold, note the 12-acre garden at this remote 18th-century villa set amongst Umbria's rolling golden hills, the abundance of organic fruit and the super-friendly owners who make breakfast for you every morning and do their utmost to provide everything you need, be it a yoga class or a private chef."

The Guardian
"The villa is surrounded by 12 acres of private grounds with fig, apple, pear, cherry and apricot trees, wild strawberries, blackberries and a vineyard of about 350 vines, all of which are organic. The area has not changed for 40 years. It's not biscuit tin-top Tuscany, it's unspoilt Umbria and that's what we love about it... Visitors [should]... turn off their mobiles, breathe and relax. La nostra casa e la tua casa."

  • “Beautiful villa in a stunning area of Umbria. Nick and Margherita were great hosts. Lovely countryside with some fantastic places to visit and wonderful restaurants to enjoy. The peaceful retreat away we required, would definitely return.”

  • “We had the best holiday of our lives at Villa Metato. The Villa is gorgeous and the interior decor and wall art are top notch. It is also spotless and has everything and more you could desire from a holiday home. The surrounding area is beautiful, Umbria is the unspoiled land of Italy and has so much unique character. For those who would also want to visit Tuscany, it is just around the corner (only a 15 minute drive by car). Margherita and Nick are amazing, it felt as though we had known them forever. They recommended excellent local wines, where to shop and visit, and also helped us make reservations at the local restaurants. Most importantly, they are such a joy to speak to - they are open and engaging and have a great sense of humor. We would recommend Villa Metato to anyone looking for the perfect getaway.”

  • “Incredible Italian hide away. The location is perfect for a quiet, romantic getaway. The villa itself is spacious and stunning; it has all the amenities you would want on holiday including the ones you hadn't thought of - DVD player, state of the art sound system, BBQ. Margherita and Nick are wonderful hosts - attentive and unobtrusive. I would definitely recommend it!!”

  • “Villa Metato really is a wonderful place to stay in a great location with amazing hosts. Margherita looked after us so well, from the beautiful breakfasts with home-made jams to art books, restaurant recommendations and great chats. The villa itself is beautifully styled and spotlessly clean, and at the same time a supremely comfortable and homely place to stay. Where to begin? The saltwater pool is just perfect and there are so many places to sit inside or outside at different times of day in sun or shade - and everywhere catered by wifi and ipod speakers. There are lots of interesting towns to visit in the area if you can tear yourself away from the pool. We had the most chilled out holiday and were really sad to leave, but were waved off with a bottle of wine from the Metato vines and a restaurant recommendation for our next destination, you can't ask for much more!”

  • “We hugely enjoyed our stay at Villa Metato - a whole house to ourselves, stylishly furnished in 70s design icons and a huge pool (saltwater!) just for us. Heaven! We were here at the end of our trip and had done enough exploring to value the house, the pool and the remote location. Our host, Margherita, made our stay especially enjoyable with her personality, her knowledge of the area and its sights and restaurants (do away w/ the guidebook) and a meticulously prepared breakfast. Climbing up and down the spiral stairs to the bathroom and kitchen took some practice, but proved to be manageable.”

  • “We spent a week at the Villa Metato for our honeymoon and I can say that it was one of the nicest places I have been to. The villa is amazing, full of everything you could need - including music in the shower!!! The pool and views are wonderful. It is a little secluded and you would need a car, but that didn't bother us at all! We had great day trips to Sienna and Perugia with no problem. The best thing about the place is the owners; they cannot do enough for you and will offer advice, book restaurants, tell you where to go, give you lovely breakfast and they changed our towels and sheets twice!!!! We were so sad to leave. A truly wonderful, wonderful place!!!”

  • “We had a fantastic week at the Villa Metato in September. Nick and Margherita were superb hosts and the hideaway they have created there is a perfect blend of romance and relaxation with lovely design pieces everywhere. It's a rural retreat with all the comforts of home and little mod cons like speakers in every room. We loved it and would recommend it to couples looking for privacy, romance and beautiful Italian countryside. You won't want to leave!”

  • “A wonderful stay, a very clean and stylish design villa. You get a breakfast in the morning which is a real treat and makes a point of difference from most villa holidays. Also, having such great hosts on hand is invaluable should you have any questions. from directions, resturaunt bookings or even a english speaking chiropractor! Great value, great pool, great people and all within an hour of some great days out, we would not hesitate to return.”

  • “We spent 5 days at Villa Metato as part of our honeymoon and it was great. The place is beautiful,it feels really private but you still have Nick and Margarita a few meters away in case you need anything. They are fantastic hosts, super warm and welcoming, we almost felt like we'd known them forever!
The location is also perfect for exploring both Umbria and Tuscany.”

  • “Villa Metato is the perfect honeymoon escape. We were treated with warmth and excellent service by our lovely hosts - this continued throughout our stay. The villa is ideal for a couple wanting a country retreat. The breakfasts provided were all local produce, fresh, tasty and well presented. The swimming pool is ideal and the outdoor space is perfect for idling. There are few large towns nearby but if that doesn't matter to you then I'd thoroughly recommend a stay. We had an ideal honeymoon and I would definitely consider returning.”

Save to favouritesPrintMailVilla MetatoUmbria is the “green heart of Italy”, and you certainly feel that when you visit Villa Metato. Found in the rolling hills on the border with Tuscany, this villa provides the perfect place to come and sit and snooze and never be tickled by the desire to leave. Situated just above the Upper Tiber valley amongst ancient woodland, it's reached via a breathtaking journey through the mountains. You’re surrounded by acres of private garden, timeless views, and your own pool. It’s staggeringly beautiful - heaven for those who wish to shake the city from their hair. If this setting sets precedents, the 1-bedroom villa matches them. This 18th-century building has been renovated with true panache: huge windows frame the view, and fabulous 20th-century designer pieces adorn the open-plan [r:IT046:interior]. On your terrace, take a deep breath, relax and feel part of the ancient wood itself. Fig trees stand on the hill, a Bocce court is shrouded in vines, and those who want to explore this undiscovered part of Italy can hire scooters and take to the hills.
