Villa Sumaya

Santa Cruz, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Location
Villa Sumaya is on the Northern shore of Lake Atitlán, which is about 3 hours from Guatemala City by car or minivan. From Panajachel, the main town on the lake, you can only take a boat across the lake to Villa Sumaya.

By Air:
Guatemala City La Aurora (100km) is the closest airport. Click on the links below for a list of airlines serving it.

From the Airport:
Villa Sumaya can arrange private transfers for you (see Rates) or you can book shuttle services to Panajachel through most travel agents (see below).

By Bus:
This is by far the most common method of transport internally. Lake Atitlán is some 3 hours from Antigua, plus another hour or so from Guatemala City airport, by private transfer or in a shuttle minibus. Prices will vary according to the luxury status of the vehicle.

By Car:
Driving around Guatemala is certainly possible, with relatively empty roads and friendly locals, but bear in mind it's expensive and you may have some concerns over security - a good working knowledge of Spanish will definitely help your cause. For car hire we recommend Holiday Autos, but please bear in mind that you can only reach Villa Sumaya by boat so you would need to leave your car in Panajachel, and there's no provision made for parking by Villa Sumaya.

Detailed directions will be sent to you once your booking is confirmed.

Save to favouritesPrintMailVilla SumayaThe Maya consider Lake Atitlán to be the centre of the universe. Aldous Huxley declared it the most beautiful lake in the world. Either way, you're left struggling for superlatives at the sight of these ever-changing waters surrounded by 3 perfectly conical volcanoes. Maya culture is alive and well here in the western highlands: 12 villages, each with its own dress, fringe the lake. It is easy to see how Californian Wendy Stauffer fell in love with Atitlán in the 80s and never left. Then in the early noughties she had the opportunity to create Villa Sumaya from a former ranch-style 1970s holiday home built on a sacred site. The result - traditionally thatched [r:GU005:accommodation], café and palapas - is in perfect harmony with its magical setting. It's only accessable by boat and on arrival you'll find tropical gardens terracing up from the lake, a yoga and spiritual temple, relaxed hospitality, healthy food, a sauna, hot tubs and a healing hut. You leave with your body and soul enriched.
