• Dining: Breakfast is served until around 11am, and the restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner. You can order drinks and snacks from the bar or via room service from 11am to 11pm, and lovely complimentary cream teas are served for guests every afternoon

When to go?

Any time of year. If you want to cycle in the surrounding countryside, spring or summer are best, but walking's good at any time of year and there are always warm fires to come back to in winter.

Author's tips

• Try beachhouse at South Milton Sands, also owned by Tamara, Matt and Ally. It's a simple takeaway café serving fantastically fresh local seafood, and you can reserve tables for dinner in summer
  
• Make sure you bring detailed directions with you (they'll be sent when you confirm a booking through i-escape) - this is a tricky place to find, and satnav won't be much help!
