Whitehouse

Chillington, near Kingsbridge, South Devon

Kids

Children are welcome but we'd recommend it more in summer than winter (unless you're taking over the whole house): the big lawn area offers a good outlet to run around and there are plenty of child-friendly beaches nearby.

Romantic couples might not appreciate noisy kids in the snug sitting rooms. The Siamese cats and Minnie the sleek Lurcher are a bit shy but a source of interest amongst younger children.

  • Best for: Babies (0-1 years)
  • Family friendly accommodation: Rooms 1 and 2 connect (sleeping max 4 adults + 1 baby); Room 6 has a sofabed and Rooms 3 and 5 are very large and can accommodate extra beds. All rooms have bathtubs as well as showers. Cots are charged, but you can bring your own if you prefer.
  • Babysitting: Babysitting is available by arrangement. See Rates.
  • Baby listening: Bring your own monitor with you. The signal reaches everywhere in the hotel so you can dine with a sleeping baby upstairs.
  • Baby equipment:
    • Cots
    • Highchairs
    • Bottle warming on request
  • Children's meals: There are kids' menus, plus high tea and half portions of adult mains. Typical dishes include macaroni cheese and jelly and ice cream. Little people need to vacate the dining area by 6pm but staff were pretty flexible when we were there.
  • Kids Activities on site:
    • Farm animals nearby
    • Children's DVDs
  • Kids Activities nearby:
    • Hit the nearby beaches
    • Go messing about on the River Dart
  • Families Should Know: There's an unfenced pond in the garden. The nearest medical facility is 5 minutes away.
Save to favouritesPrintMailWhitehouseBetween Salcombe and Dartmouth you'll find some of the prettiest coastline in England. Head to the sleepy village of Chillington but don't expect any road signs to advertise this 6-bedroom Georgian house. Instead, turn down a narrow lane, then wander up past the sweeping lawn and copper beech tree, through rose gables to the front door. Inside, it's refreshing not to find another hotel just going through the motions to tick all those boutique boxes. Nothing's done by halves. Upstairs you'll find spacious [r:uk055:rooms] with all you'd expect and more: from custom-blended toiletries to Nespresso coffee machines. Downstairs there are vintage finds, giant contemporary lamps, a cuckoo clock (they've left it running late) and a pop-art painting of Audrey Hepburn with an iPod. Oodles of theatrical style and humour; slick yet homely. Unwind in sitting rooms with small open fires and leather sofas, then saunter through to the bar and restaurant where imaginative menus have won the hearts of guests and locals alike. Finding anywhere nice like this to stay in south Devon used to be a real problem. Thanks to Whitehouse, life just got easier.
