"For those who feel happiest within earshot of the ocean,
Whitehouse, an intimate six-bedroom hotel built into a Georgian
house in south Devon, may be just the ticket. Not only does it sit
a mile inland from the coast, at Chillington (below Dartmouth), but
it has a distinct boutique ambience. Check the pop-art painting of
Audrey Hepburn with an iPod, displayed downstairs... For all this,
there’s also a Devon vibe. The hotel restaurant - where,
unsurprisingly, there’s an emphasis on seafood - is as
popular with locals as out-of-town visitors."
The Observer, April 2009
"It didn't take me long to realise that Whitehouse is no ordinary
hotel. It was gone 9pm, and as we made our way up the pretty garden
path towards the Georgian house the front door swung open.
"Welcome! Here, let me show you to your room, then you must come
down for a drink. We're all in the bar," beamed Tamara, one of the
owners. It was as if we'd just arrived at some affluent friends'
country house... This relaxed, "make yourself at home" attitude is
the secret behind Whitehouse's success."
The Times, March 2009
"The Whitehouse is, quite simply, family dining nirvana. The
conservatory dining room overlooks an enormous lawn where the
children stretched their legs after an organic meat burger and we
moved on to River Dart mussels with saffron. When it was time for
the chocolate mousse cake - warm, sprayed with gold leaf - we
tucked the children into the cinema screening room where the
proprietor popped on some Shrek so we didn't have to worry about
them becoming obesity statistics."
The Sydney Morning Herald, January 2009
"It's been open for less than a year but already the Whitehouse in
Devon is one of Britain's favourite boltholes. Just months after
welcoming its first guests in February last year, the hotel was
lauded as the "ultimate hideaway" in British Vogue's annual Don't
Miss list... From the moment you arrive, you feel at home. OK, it's
considerably grander than the average home but the atmosphere is
very much "kick off your shoes and relax" rather than "hand over
your credit card"... Huge leather sofas sit alongside old wooden
butcher's blocks, an oversized angle poise lamp is placed next to a
wall adorned with deer antlers, while chandeliers hang overhead and
fires burn in every room... From a simple tapas board of Devon
cheeses to crab from nearby Start Bay to a locally reared sirloin
steak, the food is faultless..."
Conde Nast Traveller, September 2008
"... a stylish mix of comfort and character... We like the feeling
of friendly cosseting, the stunning old building sympathetically
brought up to date, the flower gardens and the food. Complimentary
afternoon tea brought to you wherever you are in the hotel is a
nice touch - as was the picnic for the journey home..."

Jose, United Kingdom (26.04.12)“Very nice stay again at this hotel. The room was very nice again, a relaxing time for my wife & myself.”
Stephen, United Kingdom (26.03.12)“We loved the White house, excellent location, ambience and couldn't do enough for you. We really liked our room, but the bed was very creaky and quite difficult to get in and out of.
New Angel in Dartmouth was lovely and excellent value as was the Mill Inn in South Pool. We would definitely not recommend the Soar Mill Cove Hotel - not great food & overpriced.”
Jenny, United Kingdom (11.09.11)“Love this place for a chilled out weekend escape to the countryside. Rooms are fantastic, though definitely worth getting one away from the road which can be a bit noisy. Breakfast is delicious evening menu sounded very promising though dishes not quite pulled off perfectly the night we were there. Not a major letdown just a few sauces and flavours that didn't really work. Nearby Blackpool sands beach and the venus cafe is lovely - they serve yummy food to takeaway or eat in and local sharpham estate wine which you can take onto the beach with you albeit in a plastic wine glass!”
Lisa, United Kingdom (22.08.11)“It was wonderful - friendly and professional staff, beautifully designed hotel and rooms, one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in and divine food (especially the breakfast). We'll definitely be heading back there again soon. The owners also own a little cafe by the beach called The Beach House which is lovely.”
Amanda, United Kingdom (02.05.11)“House front is not very white & Whitehouse signs very difficult to see, but overall excellent”
Stephen, United Kingdom (02.04.11)“Good breakfast, lovely garden.”
