The i-escape blog / Michael Cullen

By Michael Cullen, Director

Now that the nights are drawing in and our summer holidays are a fading memory, it’s the perfect time to capture them in a beautiful photobook. This is always the final piece of my holiday jigsaw, one which extends that happy glow until I plan my next trip – and beyond. To have something tangible to leaf through is a rare joy. Not just a flurry of evanescent social posts, nor a digital photo reel which lives (and dies) in the cloud, but a beautiful and permanent record of those magical moments and dreamy details. Plus, I admit, the odd snap of my son or dog looking cute!

So when Rosemood asked us to road-test their new line of premium photo books, I was only too happy to oblige. I quickly settled on a large landscape-orientation book (29 x 22 cm) with printed hard cover, and some extra pages to make 70 in total. (I do take a lot of photos; it comes with the job).

I chose a large hard-cover landscape book with 70 pages

The creation process was extremely smooth and intuitive. I loved the design of the web interface (no app needed), the range of page layouts (from 1-9 photos per page), the choice of autofill or manual, and the fact you can sync across desktop and mobile if you’re uploading photos from different devices. My only small hiccup came when trying to change the page order, but that was probably me – and it did work fine in the end.

Best of all, prices include a retouching service to ensure your photos are saturated and sharp, as well as text and caption checking; you wouldn’t want it to be ruined by a typo on the front cover! The price came to £66, which of course is higher than most high street brands, but seemed fair value for such a premium product – and that’s before the 10% discount through i-escape.

The photo quality is superb; the binding and spine are strong and flexible

After 8 days, it dropped through my door – and I can safely say it was worth every penny. The photo quality is superb – noticeably better than my previous books. The paper (I chose matte; satin is available at no extra cost) is thick and totally crease-free; the cover feels solid and durable, the binding and spine strong and flexible. There are no blemishes or blotches – and no typos!

I love leafing through it. My wife and friends have already commented on the professional feel of the book – which I have a habit of accidentally leaving on our coffee table. I am sure it is due in no small part to the quality of the finish. Though I do still like to think it’s the photographer.

The cover feels solid and durable… and Rosemood offers a free photo retouching service
