Somerset Staycation – £85 per person (2 nights, 4-6 November)
Somerset was made for autumn. Picturesque walks around Stourhead’s lake, lazy strolls through its numerous arboretums, and lengthy visits to Hauser and Wirth’s gallery, all make curling up with a large glass of red in front of a roaring fire that bit more satisfying.
Stay: at The White Hart Somerton, a welcoming pub-with-rooms that’s perfect for cosying up in after a day’s exploring. The pretty rooms each have their own quirky charm, some feature claw-foot bathtubs, others retro wallpaper or perhaps an antique trunk, but all have super-comfortable beds to lay your head on. A Small room costs £85 per person for a 2-night stay.
Travel: Somerton is a 2.5-hour drive from London and an easy 1-hour jump from Bristol.
Lanzarote Living – £261.10 per person (4 nights, 19-23 November)
If you’d rather a sunnier autumn break, head to the volcanic Canary Island of Lanzarote where November has an average of just 5 rainfall days! Replace chilly walks with sun-drenched island exploration; visit the Timanfaya National Park, a wilderness of haunting beauty where you can peer into craters and see solidified lava flows, before relaxing on one of the pretty white (or black) sand beaches.
Stay: at family-run, 18th-century Caserio de Mozaga, located at the rural heart of the island. Its whitewashed exterior is decorated with hanging farm tools and wooden wheels, while inside rustic-chic is definitely the name of the game. Their 10% early booking discount (3-night minimum stay, book by 31st October 2014) means that a 4-night stay in a Double Room is just £146.10 per person (when booking the room only rate).
Fly: from Birmingham to Lanzarote with Ryanair, and back with Monarch, for £95 per person, departing on Wednesday 19 November and returning on Sunday 23 November.
From the airport: in order to best experience Lanzarote, we’d suggest you rent a car. Hire with Rhino starts from £20 per person.
Total cost: £261.10 per person, including all taxes.
South African Sojourn – £1,670.75 per person (7 nights, 11-18 November)
To really escape the autumnal weather, head to the Cape Winelands in South Africa. As you dip below the equator the seasons flip and you’ll find yourself in the midst of spring: the rolling vineyards will be lush, the dramatic mountain landscape covered in wildflowers and the weather warm.
Stay: at Babylonstoren, a stunningly-elegant, converted farm, just a 45-minute drive from Cape Town. The 8-hectare grounds are full of herbs, mulberry bushes, citrus groves and giant pumpkins, and all are used to make mouth-wateringly good meals in the restaurant. But be sure to do more than eat; borrow the hotel’s bikes and cycle through the area’s vineyards or unwind in the spa. Their current offer of 4 nights for 3 makes a 7-night stay in a 1-bedroom Suite just £840.25 per person, including all taxes.
Fly: from London Heathrow to Cape Town for £795 per person with Virgin Atlantic, departing on Monday 10 November (overnight flight arriving Tuesday 11 November) and returning on Tuesday 18 November (overnight flight arriving Wednesday 19 November).
From the airport: we’d suggest you hire a car in order to fully make the most of your stay. Rental with Rhino starts from £35.50 per person.
Total cost: £1,670.75 per person, including all taxes.
