Kefalonia, Greece Book from Book from £136 per night

A waterfront apartment for two and a swanky villa for eight, located just outside picturesque Fiskardo on Kefalonia’s northern tip
The scenic 80-minute drive from Kefalonia airport to Dorian is worth a trip alone, with hairpin bends, vertigo-inducing vistas of steep cliffs and blindingly beautiful turquoise coves far, far below. We pass sleepy villages with dusty lanes, picturesque churches and sunbathing cats, and slalom around utterly unfazed goats resting in the middle of the mountain pass. By the time we reach our destination, a contemporary home just outside of the idyllic fishing village of Fiskardo, we are already in full relaxation mode.

The house is split into two lodgings: a spacious, adults-only apartment for two on the ground floor, and a large villa for eight above it. Each has a contemporary Scandinavian feel, with waterfront terraces affording views across the bay towards Ithaca. Colour schemes throughout are calming greys and whites, so as not distract from the blissful scenery. A quick refreshing dip in crystal clear waters straight off the rocks across the street, followed by a snooze on the sun loungers on our sea-facing private terrace, and it’s time for dinner. It’s a short walk along cobbled streets to the pretty harbour with its pastel-coloured houses, little tavernas and fishing boats. After a simple, delicious feast of taramasalata and moussaka, washed down with a few glasses of fine Kefalonian robola, we head back and fall asleep to the relaxing sound of gentles waves lapping outside our bedroom window.
Covid-19 update: some services and facilities may be changed as a result of Coronavirus measures.

  • Waking up to the soothing sound of the sea right outside the apartment
  • Quiet waterfront location with cove access across the street (time from bed to water: 30 seconds) and private terraces for enjoying the sea view
  • Clean, calm, uncluttered vibe and top-notch appliances
  • Ideal for a “workation” - there’s an office desk in the living room of the apartment, and the WiFi works like a charm
  • Short stroll to Fiskardo's pretty harbour with its fabulous tavernas and shops

  • If you're not hiring a car it's a bit of a schlep to get to from the airport, and taxis aren't the cheapest, but once here there are plenty of shops, beaches and restaurants within walking distance
  • The villa is only available during July and August
  • Some might find that the neutral décor lacks beach vibe
  • No pool, but with the sea right outside you don't need one!
  • No kids allowed in the apartment - this is a romantic retreat for adults

Best time to go

Kefalonia's season runs from May to October. May/June and September/October are ideal times to visit with pleasant daytime temperatures of around 25C and cool evenings, plus fewer crowds. In July and August, temperatures soar and it gets busy - and pricey.

Our top tips

  • Don’t miss spectacular Alaties beach (8km): a narrow, secluded cove with the clearest of turquoise waters. There’s a much-loved, simple taverna with a relaxed vibe and great music just above.
  • If you visit during the cooler months, bring slippers as the tiled floors can get a bit cold.

Dorian is not your typical Greek island summer rental. Located in a large, contemporary home overlooking the water, its' comprised of a one-bedroom apartment on the ground floor and a four-bedroom villa on the upper floors.

The apartment has its own entrance and is exceptionally spacious. It's decorated in cool hues of grey, white and cream, and kitted out to a high standard with all modern bells and whistles, plus an office corner if you can’t fully unplug. It feels slightly more like a Scandi city pad than a beach apartment - yet somehow the concept works. The open-plan living room/kitchen area with its oversized L-shaped sofa opens up to the sea-facing terrace with daybeds, a comfy padded hanging chair and massive terracotta pots. With an equally minimalist vibe, the bedroom comes with a kingsize bed and soft Egyptian cotton sheets, Rattan chairs, a walk-in closet with ample storage space, and its own little sea-facing terrace with sun loungers. The bathroom has recessed black and white marble sinks, a freestanding bath, and a walk-in rain shower.

The villa has very similar decor but is much larger. Spread across three floors, there are four ensuite bedrooms, lots of terraces for relaxing and a big living room with kitchen and dining table at the bottom. It sleeps eight, but you could also book the apartment below if you're a larger party. Note that the villa is a family home, so it's only available during the months of July and August.

Fiskardo’s supermarkets are walkable and fairly well stocked (including a range of vegan products), and you can buy fresh fish in the harbour. Dorian is situated on the edge of Fiskardo village, on the northern tip of Kefalonia. It's an 80-minute drive from the island's airport.

    By Air
Kefalonia (63km away) is the nearest airport. It's served by charter flights from the UK and other European countries over summer; at other times you'll probably have to fly via Athens (380km away) and get a connecting flight to the island.

    From The Airport
Airport transfers can be booked in advance, but you'll probably want to hire a car - see our car rental recommendations. For an idea of distances, the airport is 5km south of the island's capital, Argostoli, and Fiskardo is 45km north, at the top of the island.

    By Boat
Kefalonia is served by ferries from Astakos (on the Greek mainland), Kyllini/Patras (Peloponnese) and neighbouring islands.
