Bijou studio villa with pool in the countryside near Palma (sleeps 2)
Just 10 minutes from the centre of bustling Palma you can find yourself in a cosy studio villa with a view of the mountains and nothing to disturb you, save for the occasional tinkle of goat bells and wind in the trees. This one-roomed garden house was created beside the home of a clever German interior designer. Named after its distinctive ochre-washed walls, its offers privacy (a partition exists between the two buildings) and light-filled interiors (warm in winter, cool enough in summer). You can hole up here for days just reading in bed or lounging on the terrace. It's ideal for a writer, an artist or a stressed out couple looking for peace and quiet.

Located on the outskirts of the village of Establiments, about 5 km northwest of central Palma, it's well-placed for checking out the city's boutiques, art galleries, historical buildings and nightlife, as well as exploring the island, walking and golf (the courses at Son Termens and Son Vida are 4km away). There are riding stables just down the road and beaches can be reached within 20 minutes. The owner has lived on the island for over 30 years and is happy to advise on walks and places of interest.

Highs

  • We loved the stylish, light and airy interiors
  • And the spacious gardens, with charming rural views and a private terrace with loungers
  • A swimming pool too - unusual for small properties in this price range
  • Combines the tranquility of the countryside with the bustle of Palma - just a 10-minute drive away

Lows

  • You will need to drive to get to the shops; a hire car is strongly recommended
  • The garden is rustic rather than manicured, with gnarled olive trees dotted in the red earth
  • The garden and pool are shared with the owner
  • Not suitable for children

Best time to go

Any time. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant; July and August get very hot. In mid-winter it's still a lot more pleasant than northern Europe, and the house has central heating.

Outside, yellow walls and painted shutters lend a Mexican feel. Inside, the style is typically Mallorquin - high wooden-beamed ceilings, terracotta-tiled floors and whitewashed walls - combined with some nice artistic touches: a carved headboard, contemporary paintings, kilims and an old writing desk. Crisp white bedlinen, a snug duvet and comfy sofa will make you want to curl up, while large French doors leading out to a sunny private terrace invite you to laze on the loungers and enjoy the views.

Eating

The small kitchenette has a 2-ring hob, sink, fridge, crockery and table for 2. There's no oven and cooking equipment is limited, so it's more suited to making snacks than gourmet dinners. But there is an outdoor barbeque to grill up more substantial meals.

Basic provisions are provided on arrival: tea, coffee, sugar, milk, fruit, beer and mineral water. The nearest supermarket is 3km away and Palma has some excellent food markets. Palma's fine restaurants, tapas bars and cafes are just a short drive away, or there's a couple of eateries about 1km away, which you could walk to at a push. For typical Mallorquin cooking and a lively atmosphere we recommend Can Pedro's in the village of Genova, just west of Palma.
