Capella Lodge

Lord Howe Island, Australia

An uncluttered, contemporary retreat with jaw-dropping views on a remote and beautiful World Heritage-listed island, 2 hours' flight from Sydney.

With soaring volcanic peaks, pristine coral reefs and lush rainforest, Lord Howe Island lies 600km northeast of mainland Australia. I would quite happily come back to Capella Lodge every year to recharge - it's the most stylish place to stay on this remote and stunning Pacific island, and the only one that overlooks the sea, with its own private beach nearby.

Inside there's a nautical feel, with clean lines, wooden decking and soft furnishings reflecting the colours of the ocean. Large windows ensure you can see the sea as much as possible, and there are just 9 immaculate and comfortable suites. Outside, the property is dotted with Frangipani trees and the indigenous Kentia palms. Friendly staff create an open and relaxed vibe and the small spa is a nice touch - enjoy a de-stress massage or soak in the outdoor hot tub. The place suits small friend and family groups keen on walking, as well as loved-up couples. Lord Howe boasts a vast range of hiking trails, good bird watching and serene, empty beaches - swim, snorkel, kayak or simply lounge about and do nothing.

Highs

  • Lord Howe itself, a gem undisturbed for centuries. Now a haven for rare plants (over half found nowhere else) and spectacular bird and marine life
  • The exceptional setting, with views out to sea, over the lagoon and across to the island's energising volcanic mountains Mount Gower and Lidgbird
  • The stylish bar and spacious restaurant, serving delectable food
  • The genuinely calm atmosphere
  • The all-inclusive tariff (excluding lunch), which avoids nasty bills at the end of your stay to deal with

Lows

  • This is the most luxurious place to stay on the island, so it's also the most expensive
  • The spa is tiny, with just one treatment room
  • No mobile phone reception - a high for some

Situated on Lord Howe's stunning southern end, Capella is the island's only luxury lodge with beach, lagoon, and mountain views...
