Casa Estrella de la Valenciana

Guanajuato, Central Mexico

Villa-style inn with panoramic views of colonial Guanajuato - a UNESCO World Heritage site with a lively cultural scene

On weekends estudiantinas (strolling minstrels) serenade followers along Guanajuato’s winding lanes. The first victory in Mexico’s War of Independence happened here, the birthplace of Diego Rivera, a university town renowned for its majolica ceramics. You could spend a week exploring Guanajuato’s museums, churches and hidden plazas. If staying at Casa Estrella de la Valenciana, tack on extra days to cover the inevitable times you’ll talk yourself out of leaving the property.

Set on a hillside near the Valenciana Mine, which supplied silver to Spain in the 16th century, this sprawling home has a lush lawn, pool and spa, several levels of breezy patios, covered terraces and great views. Owners Sharon Schaap Mendez and Jaye Johnson share their passion for Mexican art by showcasing quality local ceramics and handicrafts against comfortably understated décor. Look for details that matter: premium mattresses; 410-threadcount sheets; whirlpool bathtubs.

  • Quiet location (neighbouring a mathematics institute)
  • Within walking distance of the Valenciana church and mine, as well as shops and one of the city’s best restaurants
  • Guanajuato is one of Mexico's liveliest and finest colonial towns

Lows

  • Once you check in, you may never want to venture off the property to see the sights of Guanajuato
  • The local “dog operas” can disturb your sleep
  • It's not suitable for young children as the pool isn't fenced
