CASA IMPERIAL - REVIEW

With an understated ‘CI’ that takes its royal connections as understood, the hotel’s swirly insignia ushers you into a world of 16th-century architectural grandeur combined with 21st-century trappings and 5-star service. A pair of broad wooden doors, which would once have allowed carriages through to the inner sanctuary of the first patio, now enclose a reception area, where the smiling staff welcome you and take your cases before you can say ‘Casa Imperial?’.

Follow them through the arch to the second patio, around which lie the majority of the 21 suites, and you will find yourself in a soothing courtyard of ochre-coloured arches and creamy Corinthian columns, with the wind rustling gently in the dainty naranjos and rippling the surface of an octagonal fountain-fed pool. A geranium-lined pond lends tranquillity and coolness to the third court, while a roof terrace gives unrivalled night views over the Sevillian rooftops. If you want to treat yourself (or someone else) royally in Seville, this is the place.

HIGHS

  • The peaceful courtyards – especially the central one, with its colonnades, fountain, wicker sofas and live guitar music
  • The roof terrace, with lovely views across the housetops to the Giralda tower
  • The rich buffet breakfast
  • The excellent service – as you would expect from a 5-star hotel
  LOWS

  • Though it's classified as a 5*, it's probably closer to a 4* on a worldwide scale
  • Some of the bedrooms are a bit cramped and the bathrooms a little tired
  • Some people find the décor rather tacky
  • There is no pool, yet
  • It’s a devil to find by car (and hard enough on foot!)
