CASA PALOPO - REVIEW

We arrived at Casa Palopó after dusk so our first breathtaking sight of the sacred volcano-ringed lake was from our private terrace at dawn the next morning. All ten charming rooms and suites, as well as the two-bedroomed luxury villa, have this incomparable vision. The hotel is carefully designed over levels: the lush dining terrace runs lakeside, landscaped exotic gardens climb ever upwards, the cobalt blue swimming pool is perched with a view, there's a private lake beach with gardens and jetty. Guatemalan heritage is present in the jewel-coloured walls, vibrant artworks, painted furniture, dazzling candelabras. Traditional musical instruments decorate one wall, vintage mirrors and silver plate adorn antiques.

Only three hours from Antigua, this beautiful hotel provides sumptuous accommodation and sheer indulgent relaxation - perfect for honeymooners, couples and groups of friends. Excursions around the lake and to colourful indigenous markets are easily arranged by the courteous and helpful staff.

HIGHS

  • The hotel's location and its sublime views of the lake and the Atitlán and Tolimán volcanoes, with San Pedro in the distance (all over 10,000 feet)
  • The faultless friendly service
  • The bold, comfortable and eclectic rooms and suites
  • The restaurant terrace overlooking the volcanoes and the imaginative menu
  • The pool with a view
  • The high specification of materials and furnishings
  LOWS

  • Very little within walking distance save the lake beach (a steep climb up and down) and the local village so you have to get private transfers/taxis/hire a boat to get around the lake, to the markets, etc - all of which contributes to a 'gated community' feel
  • The extras such as transportation, activities and tours organised through Palopó (which are well organised) can be expensive
  • The beautiful garden is steep and terraced so not that conducive to hang out in
  • No children allowed
  • Some of the staff have limited English
  • You can occasionally hear traffic on the road below
