J Plus Boutique Hotel

Hong Kong, China

A chic and funky design pad, amidst a plethora of dim sum places and superb shopping on Hong Kong Island

Designed by French design guru Philippe Starck, this boutique offering is every bit as chi-chi as you'd expect. J Plus Boutique Hotel (formerly JIA Hotel), is hard to locate at first: hidden behind tinted glass on the corner of bustling Irving Street, it has an exclusive, members’ club feel. But Starck’s mesh of modern and vintage quickly reels people past the sultry exterior and in to reception, where design savvy sculptures mix with angular furniture.

In the marble lobby, beautifully adorned with sheer white drapes and Starck chairs, hip young things sip lattes and suits fire up their laptops. Upstairs, 56 rooms and suites are bright, contemporary and appealing. J Plus is perfect for younger business or leisure travellers who want an edgy hotel in the heart of Hong Kong's action. With its superb location in Causeway Bay's shopping area - think Gucci et al - and next door to lively markets and nightlife areas, this ticks every box. An atmospheric roof terrace looks over hectic streets, and the Italian restaurant is hip. The pulse of the city is right here.

Highs

  • Beautifully designed rooms with a small kitchenette in each
  • Easy access from Hong Kong airport - just 23 minutes to Central Station, then 10 minutes on the MTR
  • Complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and cakes (the cheesecake is divine); and free-flow coffee, water, juices and (in the evenings) wine
  • Staff are very helpful, and spent ages giving us local recommendations
  • Business travellers will appreciate the free local calls, laptops to borrow and complimentary conference room access

Lows

  • In early 2014 the hotel was completely refurbished by Yoo; looking at the new photos, it seems as wackily stylish as before (we will be visiting and updating our review text very shortly)
  • Our studio room was quite cramped, although it was very cool in appearance
  • Not very child-friendly: no kids' facilities and the edgy furniture in reception is a potential disaster zone
  • Happy hour is free, but the wine is a bit cheap
  • Can get noisy as it’s in a frenetic shopping and business area

Head straight to Hong Kong's first - and still hippest - boutique hotel...
