PRESS

The Independent, March 2007
"Majestic mountains tower around La Almunia del Valle, a boutique hideaway in the village of Monachil in the Sierra Nevada National Park. Almunia ticks all the boxes of a chic rustic retreat. Warm colours, terracotta tiles and stone walls fill the 10-bedroom property, which has been built into the mountainside. Outside, a stone roof terrace provides the perfect setting for dining with a view. The hotel is perfectly placed for exploration - the Sierra Nevada, complete with mountain hikes, pine forests and sinuous rivers, is on the doorstep. Meanwhile, Granada is only five miles away, the ski slopes 12 miles and the coast 50 miles."

The Sunday Times, August 2008
"...Or there’s Spain: not the coast, thanks - go far enough south to be sure of the sun and most of it’s an eyesore - but to inland Andalusia and the classy rusticity of La Almunia del Valle. A few miles from Granada, it’s a twee 10-room boutiquey place, ideal for late-summer roasting: you could spend all day gawping at the epic view from your poolside sun lounger, though you might be rather pink by the end of it."

  • “Very attentive service, great location and views.”

  • “The hotel is very scenic, on the mountainside with great views of the valley. It's 15 minutes from Granada and 30 minutes from the Sierra Nevada ski resort, so the location is perfect. The rooms are great and the owners are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast and dinners in the restaurant are very good. Also other great restaurants nearby - we ate at Casa Fernando (get the Ajo Blanco Soup). In Granada, Puerta del Carmen has great food and is a very trendy place to hang out. I highly recommend it and we went back more than once. D'Oliva is also a lot of fun - Francisco serves great wine and cooks an amazing meal on his camp stove using simple ingredients, while explaining the story of each item. Definitely a place to go for food lovers.”

  • “We loved staying here. The hotel is very peaceful, in a beautiful setting in the mountains with good walking whilst within easy reach of Granada . The evening meals were excellent and we ate there on the terrace in preference to going out.

The only downside was that they do not provide an evening meal on a Sunday!”
    Julia, United Kingdom (17.10.11)

  • “Was a beautiful place, owners so nice and helpful, fabulous food, dynamic setting, eating breakfast and dinner on the terrace surrounded by the mountains was just amazing. We booked three places through your service all were fabulous in their own way. The setting of La Almunia de la Valle is however incomparable especially, considering its proximity to Granada, made our stay there exceptional.”

  • “A beautiful setting with incredibly welcoming hosts. Luxurious and remote - ensure you have a car that can make it up the tight bends and steep inclines! The hosts are very welcoming of children but I would say the remoteness of the location lends itself more to quiet couples so we felt we had to keep the volume down a bit. Great local village with a good shop if you don't want the hotel to supply everything. Breakfast was great but as they have a wonderful fig tree growing on the terrace you may want to stay inside for it as there are a lot of wasps in summer! Rooms very stylish - much more so than I have seen in many places in Spain. A beautiful spot to hide away in the mountains - might try and go without the children next time!”

  • “The hotel is not quite as close to Granada as claimed on the site, especially considering that it can take ages to get to a car park once in the city. But it is still remarkably close, given the tranquility of the setting.
The hotel dinners were memorably good and the service charming. Some small lapses such as not replenishing (free) bottled water in the room.

The wireless internet connection is so feeble as to be unusable. But this could be a blessing.

The setting is lovely, the hotel itself delightful, the rooms in very good taste, and it's all very inexpensive for what you get.”

  • “This hotel was exceptional. In the hills outside Granada, the cooler place to be but within a short drive of the Alhambra. The rooms were tastefully decorated. We stayed in room 10 with a private terrace and an incredible view. The owners coupled with Maria make a brilliant team. Helpful, insightful and the home cooking is just lovely. We could have stayed here for much longer but unfortunately good things do need to be paid for!!”

  • “We loved our stay here! The setting is absolutely amazing with incredible panoramic views across the whole valley.
It feels more like a home than a hotel with the owners' lovely golden retriever and two cats wandering around and the staff could not have been more helpful- suggesting day trips we could do and various walks around the area. Breakfast was great out on the terrace and we had dinner there once too. The meal was lovely, and although I think the food we ate was probably not worth the 35 Euros they charge what you're paying for is the fantastic setting and the fact you don't have to drive anywhere else. Because we stayed out of peak season some of the restaurants in Monachil were not always open every night although we did eat in 'Casa Fernando' in the more residential area of Monachil (5/10 mins drive from the hotel) which was lovely.
Driving in to Granada takes about 15 minutes and is pretty straightforward- perfect for a trip to the Alhambra. We would definitely go back again and feel it was good value for money.”

  • “We drove to the hotel around 3pm and were just getting out of the car when our host greated us. It was such a lovley personal touch, she welcomed us into her home/hotel and gave us the tour. We were shown to our rooms and asked about our dinner menu. We enjoyed an afternoon by the pool enjoying the fab views. Dinner and drinks on the terrace were fantastic (sea bream baked in salt was the main) We slept extremely well and enjoyed a filling breakfast in the morning. The whole time our hosts were friendly and welcoming we were sad to leave and hope to return again some day.”

  • “We found everything absolutely excellent at La Almunia - really a great recommendation. The dinner they provide wasn't cheap but it was worth it to stay put and enjoy the evening as you had to drive to get anywhere else.”
    Sue, United Kingdom (02.06.10)

  • “This was a fun place to stay. The owner was very outgoing in a Madrid sort of way. Our room (11) looked like a set from a James Bond movie, all white leather headboard, open-plan bath, etc. Breakfast was very good (excellent coffee!), dinner was alright in a hearty way. Staff was friendly. Probably nicer in summer than in rainy April.”

Save to favouritesPrintMailLa Almunia del ValleYou’re in the first folds of the Sierra Nevada here, but only a 10-minute drive from Granada. Spectacular landscape encircles you: mountains rise across the valley, streams gurgle, pine forests cling to the hills. If you want to walk, you can strike out from the front door (maps and walking sticks are on hand); alternatively, sit out by the pool in the shade of an ancient fig tree and drink in the views. Come in winter and go skiing: the Sierra Nevada ski resort is a 20-minute car ride away. As for the house, well, that’s not bad either. It’s built into the side of a hill and a couple of the 11 [r:SP039:rooms] have raw stone walls. The style is ‘rustic chic’. Elegant, uncluttered bedrooms come with long views and crisp linen, a fire smoulders in the first-floor sitting room in winter, and summer suppers are taken up on the rooftop terrace, where, on clear nights, you’ll see the moon slip over the mountain and light up the valley below.
