Le Manoir de l'Aufragere
LE MANOIR DE L'AUFRAGERE - AT A GLANCE

If you're a Francophile foodie who appreciates unstuffy hospitality and simple comforts, this 18th-century manoir in 8 acres of land just across the channel is the place for you. Nicky, who is exuberantly English, and her French husband Régis run three-day cookery courses throughout the year.

Their gastronomic pedigree is hard to fault: she's a Cordon Bleu cook and has been running courses here for 10 years, he's a cheese-making expert who also magics wonderful cider and calvados from the apple trees on their smallholding. Their bilingual partnership offers a rare combination of Gallic insights and English-speaking tuition in the art of stylish, panic-free cooking. Follow Regis to the local market in Pont Audemer and learn how to fondle a camembert for ripeness or tell a good scallop from a dud; then, back home, look and learn as Nicky effortlessly works her magic. The result is a feast fit for a king. Come here for great camaraderie, unspoiled towns and fantastic food.

HIGHS

  • Nicky and Regis are charming, and there’s virtually nothing they won’t do to ensure you have a great time
  • Experience the best of Norman gastronomy, from gooey cheeses to cider from the manor’s orchards
  • Once you’ve paid, you won’t need your wallet again: no annoying extras (even booze is included), and fantastic value
  • Historic Honfleur, sandy beaches, the mighty Seine and its ruined abbeys are all within a short drive
  • Non-participating partners will find excellent golf courses, watersports and other activities nearby

  LOWS

  • The 5 bedrooms are simpler and less stylish than most i-escape hotels, but still homely and bright
  • Some second-floor rooms have limited headroom and low beds
  • The cookery courses are not really suitable for children
  • If you’re allergic to animals you might have a problem with the labrador, but it’s extremely well behaved
