Monte Azul

Chirripo National Park, Costa Rica

An upmarket bohemian eco retreat with 4 stylish casitas, hidden in 100 acres of cloud forest, in the remote southern highlands

Rainforest retreats are what we know and love Costa Rica for. But for rainforest retreats with an art gallery, a Californian vibe and fantastic food, you'll want Monte Azul. This 4-casita hotel is tucked away in the Talamanca Mountains of southern Costa Rica and is a perfect romantic hideaway, offering privacy, seclusion and gorgeous bohemian style. Located 4km from Chirripo National Park, you can certainly visit rain and cloud forest, zipline, go white-water rafting and surf at the beach, but the real joy of this place is its unique art-based activities. There's a contemporary gallery on site, and the artist-in-residence runs a variety of courses (including monotyping, screen printing and paper making), often attended by a set of intrigued monkeys.

Much of the food grown on the 100-acre plot feeds its guests, including coffee and creamy goat's cheese, and the restaurant's Latin American fusion food receives rave reviews from all who visit. Couples looking to get away from city life, hike to waterfalls for a wild swim and return to sublime service, a restful ambiance and an in-room massage need look no further. We haven't visited yet but know by its reputation that you won't be disappointed.

Highs

  • The romantic, super-private casitas are perfect for honeymooners
  • Fantastic adventures to be had: white-water rafting, swimming in thermal pools, ziplining, cheese making and art classes
  • Guided nature walks to see spider monkeys, sloths, teeny-tiny tree frogs and hundreds of bird species
  • Personal and attentive service
  • An utterly unique experience, at one with both art and nature; there are some good-value packages to get the most out of both

Lows

  • A 3.5-hour drive from San José airport, but this is the payoff for being somewhere blisfully remote
  • No children under 15
  • No TV or radio in rooms but you can request an iPod dock
  • Rates don't include service - an additional daily tip is suggested by the management - and late check-outs incur a huge fee per hour (unless previously agreed)
  • You need to book to eat at the restaurant and there are no other eateries within walking distance

If Costa Rica was a pioneer in ecotourism, Monte Azul may just redefine it...
