Friday's Place
Poovar Island, southern Kerala
Live the Robinson Crusoe experience in comparative comfort on a backwater island just 1 km from the Arabian sea - the ultimate chill zone
Friday's Place is a simple eco-friendly retreat hidden within acres
of undeveloped palm groves on the quiet banks of the Neyyar river
in southern Kerala. The brainwave of British couple Mark and
Sujeewa Reynolds, the lodge has four teak
cottages
and in 2007 added a honeymoon suite, all surrounded by canals to
ensure minimal intrusion on the environment and maximum privacy for
guests. It feels remote yet it's only a 40 minute drive from
Trivandrum airport, and a short and delightful boat ride to Poovar
Beach perfect for stunning sunsets and walking to fishing
villages.
Organic produce from the local market is bought daily and fishermen
haggle over huge crabs and fish at the jetty. This is the heart of
Ayurveda and Yoga country so ensure you enjoy a rejuvenating
massage. At night, under crystal evening skies gaze at the wonders
of the cosmos through the astronomical telescope. By day, spy
kingfisher and black necked stork.

Highs
- Serene, unspoilt position in palm gardens
- Great food with warm and welcoming service
- The world's first-ever Tsunami House - the honeymoon suite is set atop a vast tower
- Award-winning eco-technology - solar power, a bio-electric sewage plant and construction using all natural materials from sustainable sources
- Feels very remote but only a 40-minute drive from Trivandrum Airport
- Secluded setting, away from the hassle and bustle of town
Lows
- There's no pool and the sea is too dangerous for swimming (although day trips to Kovalam can be arranged for sea swimming), but the river is clean and safe for a dip
- There is no hot water, and the bathroom is communal (although the Tsunami House has en suite)
- Some may find it a bit too 'back to nature' - don't be surprised if you find the occasional spider or mouse visiting your cottage
- It is a small place, with many communal facilities, but private, quiet areas can be found
A delightfully low-key retreat of stilted thatched lodges connected by wooden walkways...
