The rugged peaks of the Andes soar in the distance; close by the Prussian blue of the glacial Nahuel Huapi Lake is mesmerising. You can see thick forests of towering conifers and beeches – but where are you? Answer, in bed. In a sumptuous kingsize bed to be exact, but you haven’t even had to step outside to drink in these magnificent views. This is Patagonia Vista Lodge and it looks fabulous.

Set on the shores of one of Argentina’s most beautiful lakes, the main lodge and 5 private apartments are built of cedar wood and stone, echoing nature around them. Enormous glass windows mean the views are ever present yet inside they’re an intimate space to escape the world. With squashy sofas and a fireplace to snuggle up beside, and a spa and pool a few steps away, everything is in place for relaxation and romance. The region offers glorious hiking through empty landscapes, spectacular riding, boat trips through fjords and great skiing and snowboarding in winter.

• Location, location: based in the wonderfully wild Nahuel Huapi National Park, yet within easy reach of Bariloche – a charming, Alpine-style town
• Each apartment has a terrace with sunloungers so you can laze in the sun and soak up the scenery
• On-site spa offering 2 pools and various saunas: perfect for pampering
• Breakfast served when and where you want
• You’re only 18km from Cerro Catedral – South America’s top winter sports destination

Lows

• There's no restaurant (although you get your own kitchenette) and the best dining options are in Bariloche, 22km away...
• So although the hotel offers a transfer, you'd probably want to hire a car to save on taxis
• Recent feedback suggests the soundproofing between adjacent apartments could be better
• The staff don't speak great English but they're apparently very welcoming and helpful
• This would be a great place to come with a friend but all beds are doubles
