Londas Guesthouse
Areopolis, Greece
Press Reviews
Frommer's
"Small and well-appointed, the Londas Guesthouse has three doubles
and a triple in a restored 18th-century tower off Ayii Taxiarches
Square. Each unit has an en suite bathroom, done with more
attention to detail than is customary in this part of Greece (not
to mention paintings done by one of the owners). There are views
over the town from the rooms and their terraces. There's no
air-conditioning (the winds here are so fierce that it is almost
never needed) and, to ensure tranquillity, no TVs. Owner/managers
Hans Kleiner and Iakovos Xenakis speak most of the languages you
will probably need, are most helpful, serve wonderful homemade
preserves at breakfast, and have great suggestions on how best to
enjoy the Mani."
Great Small Hotels in Greece
"Londas is a strikingly charming Maniot tower house, quietly
situated close to the main church of Areopoli, the small capital of
the Mani. it was built at the end of the 18th century by
Mavromichalis... During the Second World War, the tower burnt down
and was abandoned until it was bought in 1984 by a Greek painter
Iakovos Xenakis and his Swiss friend Hans Kleiner, who has a great
passion for architecture. It took them four years to carry out a
meticulous restoration of the tower, and their work has resulted in
what is without doubt the prettiest little hotel in the area."

“Initially we thought that the rooms, despite the super design and architecture inside the tower, were a little overpriced as we've stayed in other 'boutique' hotels in Greece for the same price and this place lacked a few of the things you normally expect (e.g. toiletries, doors that lock, safeboxes, plusher towels, more variety of breakfast foods etc.). That being said, the hosts made the stay fun and interesting - we had great conversations with them over ouzo and local olives on their tower rooftop (stunning views) and they provided plenty of local knowledge and interesting stories. I now appreciate that they've kept their guesthouse pure and simple and healthy, no unnecessary waste, and that this is how it should be.
We walked to Limeni from Londas along a barely used windy backroad lined with crumbling stone walls and then down a steep hill to the blue sea - this is the closest swimming spot.”
