POPI'S WINDMILL - AT A GLANCE
The island of Milos is famous for a beautiful, scantily-clad, perfectly-formed, 6-foot tall woman. But, before you buy your ticket, I should warn you that she is 2000 years old, made of marble, she’s lost her arms somewhere along the way, and she is currently in Paris (not entirely of her own will).
Nevertheless, there are plenty of reasons to visit the island where Venus de Milo was found: cliff-ringed beaches, smugglers’ coves, bizarre rock formations, hot springs, picturesque villages, C19 churches and an authentic indifference towards foreign tourism which is at times endearing, at times saddening. On the rocky ridge above her resting place – once the Acropolis of ancient Milos, now part of Tripiti village – stands a string of windmills, three of which have been converted into guest accommodation. The one pictured has two bedrooms and an outhouse with kitchen and bathroom, and the owner can also fix up local car hire. So, if you’re a family or couple looking for an unusual beach holiday on an offbeat Greek island, then why not give it a whirl?

HIGHS
The coastline - Paliochori beach, Sarakiniko cove, Papafraga sea-cave – a short drive or cruise away. The ancient catacombs and ruins just down the hill. The novelty of sleeping in a round building. The view over Adamas inlet. |

LOWS
The island is far from picture-perfect, with a generous helping of modern buildings and development. The windmill may feel cramped and, when the wind blows, noisy. The shiny piny interior is not to everyone’s taste. |
