Reillys Rock Lodge and Mkhaya Camp
Swaziland, South Africa
This historic farmhouse in Mlilwane combines colonial elegance, excellent game-viewing (on foot, bicycle, horse or jeep!) and a passion for conservation
Steeped in history and set against the backdrop of the Nyonyane
mountain with wonderful views of the Ezulwini Valley,
Reilly’s Rock is Swaziland’s most upmarket destination.
Originally brought for the price of an ox wagon by Mickey Reilly in
1899, the historic farmhouse is still owned and managed
by second and third generation Reillys. Filled with family
antiques, the atmosphere is civilized yet cosy and intimate.
Swaziland owes the creation and survival of its main wildlife
reserves to Ted Reilly who was almost single-handedly responsible
for engineering the end of Swaziland’s Rhino wars. If
you’re lucky enough to engage him in conversation over his
favourite cup of coffee, his tales will enthral you for hours.
Visits to the local Swazi chief's homestead, 4x4 drives, mountain
biking, horseriding, and guided and self-guided walks in the
surrounding Mlilwane reserve can easily be arranged. Or just sit on
the veranda watching zebra, impala and wildebeest on the grassy
plains below.

Highs
- Taking a self guided walk over the mountains watching a lone giraffe amble by or a family of warthogs scuttle out of your path
- A quiet evening drink on the veranda gazing up at the huge, clear starry night skies
- The Reillys who pioneered Swaziland’s wildlife conservation
Lows
- You won’t find the Big Five in Mlilwane but an absence of dangerous animals means you can walk around freely and game drives in sister reserves should satisfy
- If you came to Swaziland for the exotic tastes of the country you may be surprised to be served a typically “English” meal. Apple crumble and roast potatoes are standard fare
The original structure was built in exchange for an £80 ox wagon...
