Relais Villa Vittoria

Laglio, Lake Como, Italy

A romantic lakeside retreat that honeymooners, proposers and loved-up couples will adore

In general, the thought of minimalism seems to give Italian interior designers a heart attack. But here at Relais Villa Vittoria, on the banks of Lake Como, a little design restraint has created a luxurious 12-roomed hideaway. What was once a holiday home for a Milanese noble family is now a secluded and romantic retreat, with gauzy curtains billowing on 4-poster beds, cosy nooks for savouring wine in the verdant garden, and an infinity pool overlooking the lake.

Brand new in April 2011, we haven't visited yet, but it's the younger sister of Relais Regina Teodolinda next door, with a fresher design and the addition of a spa and winebar/bistro serving fantastic vintages in the cellar. It has its history, too - the mulberry garden once raised silk worms for the area’s famous silk - but revels less in it than its neighbour.

Relax and be cossetted while you’re here, indulging in spa treatments and the fantastic food and wine. Take a kayak or pleasure boat on the lake, picnic in a secluded spot that can only be reached by boat, or eat out in Lake Como’s famous and fabulous restaurants.

Highs

  • The glamorous infinity pool has such great views, it’s almost like you’re swimming in the lake (but it’s much warmer!)
  • Elegant, spacious rooms, with stunning lake views. Splash out on a suite if it's a special occasion
  • We like the modern, pared-back Italian style on show here
  • There’s lots to do in Lake Como: villas and gardens to visit, wonderful food and wine, plus hiking, climbing and golf
  • You can hire motorboats and dinghies, or borrow kayaks, for exploring the lake’s hard-to-reach places

Lows

  • The village of Laglio, which the hotel is in, is a quiet spot of busy Lake Como - perhaps too quiet for some
  • You probably need a car to get the most out of the area
  • There's a 2-night minimum stay in High Season
  • According to feedback, the WiFi is a little unreliable
  • There isn’t a lot of parking, but you can park next door in Relais Regina Teodolinda if necessary
