Tensing Pen

Negril, Jamaica

A laid-back seaside hideaway on a clifftop in Negril - ideal for rest and romance

Set in a private cove on the western tip of Negril, Tensing Pen is a tranquil base for a restful holiday, but within easy walking distance of the buzzy town. Its wood, stone and thatch cottages are sprinkled throughout lush tropical gardens and rocky outcrops, each with simple but stylish interiors, and nearly all with sea views.

With 180 degrees of horizon and no other hotel in sight, this is a perfect place to unwind. There's no beach, but you can while away your days on comfy loungers beside the pool or on small stone terraces that jut out into the sea. Need to cool off? The brave can dive straight off the outcrops or main bridge; for cautious souls there are plunging metal ladders into the ocean.

There are no TVs or live bands at mealtimes - life is made simple for a change. So go with the vibe and take a yoga class or indulge with a massage. The restaurant dishes up great modern Jamaican food, and the bar provides a gathering place to witness amazing sunsets over an early-evening cocktail. All in all, it's a rather special place and guests return year after year, lots to get married.

Highs

  • Lots of space: there can be around 50 people when full, but it doesn’t feel crowded
  • A range of accommodation to suit all budgets and group sizes: small rooms, larger cottages, 2 full houses
  • The peaceful shoreline – tourist boats pass by but don't stop, so the tranquility is maintained
  • Upscale but low key, with friendly service
  • Watching the sun set from a hammock, or the sea lull from your candelit balcony

Lows

  • The sea can be slightly rough, and getting in is for the sure-footed
  • If your room is set back off the shoreline, you may hear noise from the road / music from bars
  • The small restaurant gets very busy if the hotel is full, so you need to be relaxed about the service
  • No beach, but 7-Mile Beach in Negril is a quick taxi ride away

The place is a little gem...
