THE ELEPHANT AT PANGBOURNE - REVIEWWhen you take over an old coaching inn called The Elephant, it's hard not to take the name and run with it - especially if you're Christophe Brooke, a card-carrying India aficionado and the brains behind 2 exotically redecorated inns in Somerset and the Cotswolds. So no surprise that rooms here - 22 of them, now - hark back to the days of the Raj, with all manner of Indian accoutrements. We loved the darker, jewel-coloured rooms, all with huge comfortable beds and generous bathrooms, while the lighter rooms have a more feminine touch.A cosy reception area leads to the restaurant by way of a glamorous cocktail lounge and beautiful lawned gardens - the perfect place to relax on a summer evening with a G&T. Being right next door to the village church, it's also a popular venue for the quintessential English wedding, as well as small business groups (there are 3 meeting rooms, and west London is just an hour away). Not that it's soulless: the "Babar" buzzes with locals and pub grub, and the ex-Savoy chef serves finer fare in the Eastern-themed restaurant. It's an invigorating dose of India in the heart of the Home Counties. |
