Tower Lodge

Pokolbin, NSW, Australia

A truly unique hotel-cum-winery in the heart of the Hunter Valley, with vast and exotic suites, Roman pool, massage pavilion and acres of grounds

One of Australia's premier wine regions, the Hunter Valley - two hours north of Sydney - has long been a magnet for discerning gourmet travellers. Aside from 70 wineries and dozens of top restaurants, its tranquil rolling hills are also a charming setting for golf, riding, shopping, food and music festivals.

In 2000, it acquired one of Australia's most exotic and extraordinary hotels. Tower Lodge was financed and designed by iconic wine guru the late Len Evans, and his varied passions - Spanish architecture, French antiques, Italianate style - overwhelm you. Angular purple adobe walls enclose a baronial dining room and a library packed with opulent fabrics, vast mirrors, Chinese old masters, oversized fireplaces and ornate chandeliers. Passageways lead from a cloistered courtyard to twelve sumptuous suites, with 16-foot ceilings and double-ended whirlpool baths. Outside are 70 acres of landscaped grounds, including a short-putt golf course and immaculate vineyards. A true one-off.

Highs

  • Bold and eclectic combination of styles, lavish attention to detail
  • High-spec, spacious rooms with dressing room and terrace
  • Excellent wine cellar
  • Colonnaded swimming pool, with gym, sauna and massage room
  • Professional and helpful service at all hours for any request
  • Centrally located in the Hunter: you can walk to wineries and restaurants
  • Guests are offered a tour of the attached winery

Lows

  • No restaurant on the premises, but rave-reviewed Roberts is a five minute stroll, and other eateries abound
  • Decor is determinedly grandiose in style, which may not suit everybody
  • Expect a well-heeled gentrified clientele, rather than a funky young vibe
  • There are certainly cheaper places to stay in the Hunter - but nothing quite like this!

The lodge resembles a Spanish hacienda with a central courtyard, oversized fireplaces and tiled floors...
