Westover Hall
Milford-on-Sea, Lymington, Hampshire
A luxurious but laid-back country house and restaurant, tucked between the New Forest and the sea
Once the beach-retreat of wealthy industrialists, the Siemens
family, Westover Hall is perfectly placed for a typical English
seaside holiday. Right on the sea cliffs, with glorious views of
the Needles off the Isle of Wight and the Purbecks in Dorset, you
can walk along the cliff path with ice creams, sit in the bright
blue beach hut eating fish and chips, or stroll down to the shingle
beach to see who can throw their stones the farthest.
But there is nothing typical about Westover Hall. Inside, no
expense was spared: stained glass windows by Oscar Paterson
(because Siemens' wife didn't like curtains), William de Morgan
tiles around the fireplaces, and £25,000-worth of oak
panelling in the reception hall and galleried landing. The lounge
and 14 bedrooms are supremely cosy and relaxed, while the
fantastic lunch and dinner fare draws visitors and locals alike.
Outside, indigenous grasses fringe the cliffs while, in the garden,
a small boat - seemingly washed ashore - reminds you how close you
are to the sea. As if you need reminding.

Highs
- Amazing sea views – from the bar, terrace and from some bedrooms
- The food – it's locally sourced, deliciously cooked and the offer at lunchtime is great value
- The family-friendly staff – they're very accommodating towards children
- Its location – there is loads to do in the surrounding area (Hurst Castle, Beaulieu Motor Museum, the New Forest), and of course the beach is just steps away
Lows
- Some rooms don't have a view at all, and though this is reflected in their price, you’re still paying for the location of the hotel
- Though delicious, the three-course dinner menu is not necessarily what everyone wants in the evening, though there are some lighter options too
- It's very popular at weekends in the summer and you'll have to book well in advance - they don't ask for a minimum stay, though
Will set you up nicely for a romantic stroll along the rugged beach at the foot of the hotel's grounds...
