Boutique Apartment Amsterdam

Grachtengordel, Amsterdam, Holland Book from Book from £216 per night

A sexy little apartment in a 17thC canal house, perched over a couple of Amsterdam’s most scenic - and central - canals (sleeps 2)
This jewel of a rental leans over one of Amsterdam’s loveliest intersections: 2 charming canals with a large square (cum beer terrace) across the street. You could lounge for hours on your mini-roof deck or beside your living room windows, simply watching the boats putter along. But there’s so much else to do! Nearby, you can explore Utrechtsestraat's eclectic boutiques or grab a bite in hip De Pijp. Want to hit a museum? The world-class Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum, and Stedelijk are all within walking distance.

But if you'd prefer to just stay home, we wouldn’t blame you. Your apartment - recently renovated by an up-and-coming young fashion designer - is playful, fun, and full of surprises. Climb a steep flight of stairs to reach the first level: a kitchen/living area decorated in rich jewel tones with striking ebony floors and a bright white modern kitchen. Continue climbing and you'll find your bedroom, an oasis of soothing whites and creams with a massive canopy bed under the sloping eaves. Pure romance. There’s a gorgeous bathroom up here, too, plus the little roof terrace with yet more views, the Prinsengracht stretching below. We felt like we were living in the Amsterdam postcard.

  • Oozes style: funky furniture, vibrant art and fun details (a vintage vinyl record player, Snoecks magazines)
  • An unbeatable location
  • Privacy: this is your own place, all to yourself
  • Bikes included in the rental so you can spin off all over the city
  • Luxurious touches: Marie Stella Maris body care products, iPad with Sonos sound system and Netflix, a Nespresso and a generous selection of local liquors

  • Steep, shallow stairs with no elevator
  • The central location means some city noise at night
  • No dining table, just a breakfast bar
  • No free parking, though you won't need a car

Best time to go

Amsterdam is fun any time of year, but we'd love to return to this apartment in the warm summer months, when you could throw open the windows or sit out on the tiny roof terrace to watch the parade of boats on the canals below.

Our top tips

We love nearby Utrechtsetraat for its rich mix of old-school shops (a vinyl record store, bookshop, butcher, bridge-side fish stall, bakery, and comfy cafes) with newer, high-end boutiques (women’s clothing stores, designer trinket shops, jewellers, a fancy patisserie and, at the very end, a posh cannabis boutique!). Great people-watching, too.

The apartment may have the façade and bones of a 17thC Dutch canal house, but it’s decorated in a bold, contemporary style. In the living/dining area, floors and casings lacquered in sharp, shiny ebony contrast with rich, emerald-coloured walls. There’s a boudoir feel here: a leopard-print footstool in one corner, a green shag rug and a vintage couch in vivid, velvet fuchsia. Playful touches include a neon “Wham!” sign, a vinyl record player perched on vintage magazines and a cluster of colorful Guillaume Corneille prints on the wall. We coveted the Prince poster in the kitchen.

Upstairs is a different story: whitewashed floorboards and walls surround a comfy, white canopy bed. It’s like living in a cloud, up under the eaves. The gorgeous ensuite bathroom has a rain shower and windows onto a mini-roof terrace, which is the perfect spot for evening cocktails or a morning cuppa while watching the boats and bicycles wind along the Prinsengracht below.

There’s the trendy De Pijp neighborhood, full of fabulous breakfast nooks and hip bars, just a few blocks south. And there are cafes across the road. Can’t choose?
