Understated luxury in a historic Swiss mountain village: 6 modern apartments for 4-10, with hotel services

Understated luxury in a historic Swiss mountain village: 6 modern apartments for 4-10, with hotel services

This small but decidedly exclusive collection of pristine designer apartments is perched high on a rocky spur overlooking the Swiss resort of Zermatt. It attracts a style-conscious clientele of families and groups of friends who come year-round for the breathtaking outdoor scenery (the resort is overshadowed by the mighty, Toblerone-shaped Matterhorn), and the vast range of activities on offer.

Owned by Rudy Julen (from one of the 4 separate Julen families who seem to own most of the resort), what makes these apartments so special is their plum location, hotel-style services and cool interiors. Rudy is a hobby sheep farmer, keeping 300 Blacknose Valois sheep in his spare time, and this detail has been imaginatively picked up by the apartments' interior designer. There are sheep-themed features throughout, from balls of wool and giant black-and-white photos to cosy sheepskins artfully draped over chairs. Even the lift linking the floors is lined with a sheep print.

Highs

  • Combines the privacy and relaxed vibe of a chalet with the services of a first-class hotel, including breakfast delivered to your door, a wellness area and a concierge
  • A mere 2-minute stroll down to the main square in buzzy Zermatt, a resort where many chalets and hotels are out on a limb
  • Spacious, light-filled accommodation with lots of luxurious touches - bathrobes, Apple TVs with movies and a Nespresso
  • The flexibility of being able to self-cater some meals, order in others via room service, and stroll to great restaurants
  • All bedrooms can be set up as doubles or twins, and all have their own bathroom - perfect for couples, friends and families

Lows

  • No communal bar area or restaurant so it feels a little like the building lacks a heart
  • No pool, just a shared large whirlpool, wooden sauna and steam room
  • Expensive, but worth it

Best time to go

Winter is always busy, especially over Christmas and New Year. January is cold but the snow can be fantastic. February is busy and expensive so best avoided if possible. March is our favourite month; few crowds and generally sunny weather and great snow. The resort is closed in May until early June, which is a lovely month for spring flowers (springtime is later at this altitude). September and October are perfect hiking and biking months. Zermatt stages various festivals which pull in the crowds, including the groovy Zermatt Unplugged in April, and a classical music festival in late August.

Our top tips

Catch the ‘first tracks’ gondola up the Klein Matterhorn early in the morning to see the glittering sunrise and to ski virgin slopes. And don’t miss lunch at Chez Vrony, one of Zermatt’s celebrated mountain restaurants; a hang-out of the rich and beautiful (open both summer and winter).

Rooms

There are 6 self-contained apartments, ranging from 2-bedroom to 5-bedroom set-ups, with fully kitted-out kitchens, modern dining areas and relaxing sofa spaces where you can watch movies on an Apple TV. The overall style is crisp, pared back and contemporary; kitchens are all slinky dark slate while bedrooms feature light wood, pale stone and cream woollen curtains. Pops of colour come from scarlet cushions and sheep-themed arty installations, such as fluorescent balls of wool stuck on walls above the beds. The theme is taken even further with a sheep-shaped soap in each ensuite shower bathroom, along with lovely Bogner toiletries. Larger room(s) in each apartment also have deep roll-top baths - heaven after a day on the slopes.

All 6 apartments are decorated similarly, though the biggest, Panorama, is undoubtedly king of the castle. Set in the eaves with 5 bedrooms, it features a state-of-the art remote-controlled gas fireplace and stylish sheepskin chairs to snuggle into.

Features include:

  • Bathrobes
  • Hairdryer
  • Safe box
  • WiFi

Eating

The apartments are booked on a B&B basis, and breakfast is served to you at the table in your apartment. There is a professional kitchen so can prepare hot options such as pancakes and waffles on request, but the standard offering is yogurt, fresh fruit, bread and pastries, and cold cuts of local meats and cheeses.

Later, there are 3 options for dinner: guests can have a professional chef cook for them in their apartments; family-style dinners can be delivered, consisting of 3 ready-made courses of ‘casual dining’ such as fondue or various surf and turf options; or else regular hotel-style room service can be called upon (with options including lasagne, risotto and pizza). Downstairs there's a wine cellar, if you want to pick out something special to accompany your meal.

Otherwise, guests can self-cater in their sleek kitchens (grocery shops nearby) or dine out in one of Zermatt’s many excellent restaurants. At The Europe, we feasted on sweet pumpkin soup followed by a rich, almost chocolatey, osso bucco with courgette risotto. Pud was an extraordinary kirsch parfait with pineapple in verbena juice.

Activities

  • Zermatt is a world-class, snow-sure ski resort, rising to a dizzily skiable 3880m. The skiing is extensive and, given that there is a glacier, year-round, too. The concierge can organise boot/equipment hire and ski passes
  • Try heli-skiing - expensive but utterly worth it for the jaw-dropping scenery and circuit of the Matterhorn itself
  • Spend a day snow-shoeing - there are numerous trails to follow
  • In summer, guests can hike or mountain climb (the lifts all run year-round). There are numerous peaks over 4000m and Zermatt has a rich mountaineering history ever since the Matterhorn was first scaled in 1865
  • You can hire mountain bikes if you'd prefer to explore on 2 wheels
  • Water-skiing is popular, on the lake just down the valley in Tasch
  • Back at the apartments, reward tired limbs with a soak in the whirlpool, a blast of heat in the sauna or a massage. There's a cinema room for further unwinding, with a big DVD library

Activities on site or nearby include:

    • Climbing
    • Hiking
    • Mountain biking

Entertainment-wise, you'll find board games and children’s DVDs in your apartment, as well as Apple TV ready-loaded with children’s viewing.
