Como Metropolitan Miami Beach

Miami, United States Book from Book from £210 per night

Contemporary take on an Art Deco classic, with an Asian spa, delightful restaurant, cool pool and almost private beach
Take a landmark 1939 hotel (the Traymore), infuse it with cool Italian design and pampering Oriental sensibilities, and you have Como's take on Miami Beach. The first foray from Singaporean entrepreneur Christina Ong into the USA, this hotel fulfils every expectation of superlative style and service. As you enter the lobby with its soaring white fluted columns and gleaming terrazza floors, you feel like you've stepped into Gatsby's world. Through the far windows, beyond the long bar and restaurant, a glimpse of swaying palms and white umbrellas sets the breezy mood for this beachside residence.

Though it’s only a 10-minute walk from the hustly South Beach strip, here you’re enveloped in a cocoon of calm. Guests tend to be metropolitan weekenders from north-eastern USA and European sophisticates who want to chill in style, away from Miami vices. There’s all you need to keep you here, too: the Como Shambhala spa with its holistic approach to well-being, a secluded swimming pool with its own bar, a rooftop sun deck, super-comfy beds in the 74 sunlit rooms, the destination Traymore restaurant - and, just a few steps away, soft sands and turquoise seas. All this, and the most polite hotel staff I’ve ever met.
Covid-19 update: some services and facilities may be changed as a result of Coronavirus measures.

  • Irresistible food, especially the morning pastries, desserts and chocolates
  • Heavenly scented own-blend bathroom goodies
  • Stunning original architectural details and inventive lighting in the grand lobby and restaurant
  • Right on the beach (unlike most Miami hotels), a practically private stretch of golden sand
  • A relaxed, sophisticated way to experience Miami, away from frenetic South Beach

  • If you’re not into cool minimalism, you might find the rooms a tad clinical and hard-edged
  • Compulsory daily 'resort fee' (though it does get you beach loungers, towels and bottled water)
  • Valet-only parking

Best time to go

December to April is high season and the best time to visit weather-wise; after that it gets super-humid, and you don’t want to be here during the hurricane season (June to November). Art Basel is a major draw in the first week in December, as is the South Beach Wine and Food Festival on the third weekend in February.

Our top tips

  • If taxi drivers (many of them Spanish-speaking) look blank when you ask for the Como Metropolitan, try ‘the Traymore’ - and look out for that name, still emblazoned at the top of the white facade, since this is a designated historic building
  • Don’t slump down too heavily on the cute ‘leather’ pouffes in the lobby - they’re in fact made of stone-like resin!

Room: Ocean View Suite

Reached via rather industrial, dark corridors and heavy grey doors, the 74 rooms and suites are conversely flooded with light. Ultra-designed down to the last pen by Paola Navone, they take their palette of dove grey, white and peppermint green from the original lobby terrazza floors. You’ll find those cool floors echoed in the bedrooms, along with creative details such as fluted walls and white button-back leather cupboard doors. While the seating isn’t the sort you’d flop into, the kingsize bed certainly is. We had a blissfully sound night’s sleep.

Our Metropolitan Room had a view of the Intracoastal Waterway, but the prize rooms are, of course, the sun-filled Ocean View rooms and suites, which are more like apartments, some with separate living rooms, some with balconies. Twin rooms are available on request.

You're in for a treat at The Traymore. By day, it’s informal and bright, with a sense of the outdoors filtering through the Venetian blinds; by night it’s more glam and artily lit. Down one side is a long cocktail bar where you can kick off with a speciality gin-based aperitif, choosing from 40 hand-crafted gins and house tonics.

Menus brim with irresistible dishes using the best local ingredients. We tucked into crisp-fried cod with celeriac remoulade, and a fragrant seafood stew with tomatoes, fennel and feta, every mouthful bursting with individual flavours. The desserts are works of art - we loved the sesame tuille with passion-fruit cream, mango and mango sorbet, and a featherlight orange chocolate mousse with crunchy feuilletine and blood orange sorbet.

Breakfast is a la carte and includes an exquisite selection of tropical fruits and berries, dainty yoghurt pots, the best granola ever, melt-in-the-mouth pastries and an array of hot dishes.

For a change of scene, take a culinary tour through Miami’s ethnic cuisines, sampling Cuban, Latin, Greek, Spanish and Thai at nearby restaurants; reception can advise.

The hotel has baby cots or rollaway beds, interconnecting rooms and babysitters, and children under 12 eat half-price. Nevertheless, COMO Metropolitan Miami Beach feels like an adult environment. It's most suitable for pre-toddlers (too many hard floors and edges for little ones) and beach-loving children aged around 7 to 11; teenagers would most likely prefer to be in the midst of the action of South Beach.

Best for:

Babies (0-1 years), Children (4-12 years)

Family friendly accommodation:

All rooms can fit a baby cot. The Suites can fit 1 rollaway bed.

On request.

The location was perfect! The pools and lounging areas were particularly well designed although we would have liked more lifts. Food was of high quality - a lot of it spicy and garlicky. The restaurant lacked atmosphere but there were never too many people eating. All in all, it was a super hotel and we would stay again!
