Scarlette New Delhi

Delhi, India Book from Book from £76 per night

Serene boutique escape in a graceful Delhi suburb, with 4 rooms, home-cooked food, and a warm welcome
This French-owned guesthouse is beautifully decorated, and imbued with a warm welcome. White walls are covered in framed vintage prints, there are rugs on the floor and the antique furniture is loaded with books to browse through. What first strikes you, though, is the sheer tranquility. Delhi is a big, tumultuous city, and it’s so refreshing to arrive at and return to this quiet, calm space, to be offered tea and cake.

With only 4 rooms, it’s always calm and uncrowded, and the intimate size allows a personal touch from owner Pauline, who wants her guesthouse to feel like a 'boutique homestay'. All the furnishings are beautifully eclectic and harmonious - a blend of French elegance and Indian heritage - and the large sitting room and eating area allow you to be as sociable or private as you like. The area is also a great place to explore, with the funky restaurant and bar-filled enclave of Hauz Khas a short drive away, and leafy Deer Park likewise. An easy introduction to Delhi.

Highs

  • A feeling of safety and home-from-home that you’ll particularly appreciate after a day sightseeing
  • Set in a quiet suburb of this often noisy city, yet convenient for the sights of New Delhi - the guesthouse offers guided tours
  • Fantastic value
  • Home-cooked food on request: the set menu alternates nightly between Indian and European food
  • Helpful, charming staff

Lows

  • A fair way from central Delhi, but Pauline can arrange transport there and it's close to the international airport
  • Meals/drinks are quite expensive

Best time to go

The best time to visit Delhi is from October, when the city is refreshed after the monsoon, to early April. Expect a dry heat with very little humidity, though it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings during December, January and February. Temperatures rise in March and April and by June can reach a stifling 45C. The monsoon arrives in July and continues until September.

Our top tips

You can buy any of the items you see around the house, from the vintage framed photographs, to books or handmade rugs. Much less hassle than haggling at a market!

Rooms

The 4 rooms have high ceilings, and are decorated in white or muted hues, with dramatic, stylish splashes of stronger colour. They’re filled with beautiful, interesting antiques, books and rugs, and iPod docks are a nice touch. Ensuite bathrooms have showers.

Room 1 (downstairs, a Standard) is the smallest, but still spacious, with a striking black wall and private entrance. Rooms 2 and 3, the Deluxe Rooms, are the pick. Room 2 has a large leafy terrace and a sofa for extra guests. Room 3 has a beautiful handstitched rug, and is best for families, with a small adjoining single room. Room 4, on the top floor, is another Standard room, but has a balcony and is lighter and airier than Room 1.

Features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Blackout curtains
  • Cots Available
  • Extra beds
  • Fan
  • Hairdryer
  • Ipod dock
  • Phone
  • Terrace
  • Tv
  • WiFi

Eating

The dining area adjoins the sitting room, with a row of close tables for 2. Meals are beautifully presented, using local crockery, printed linens and candles at night. For breakfast, the bread is notably delicious, and there's homemade jam, fresh fruit salad and eggs on order. Tea, coffee and homemade cakes are for sale all day, as are well as light lunches (sandwiches and so on).

Every night a 3-course dinner is served - let them know in advance if you want to eat in. It alternates between Indian and European cuisine, so we had a very tasty soup, followed by quiche and salad, then a deliciously solid chocolate mousse. Another night you could be treated to chicken tikka or grilled paneer with lemon rice. Dietary requirements can be catered for.

Ask Pauline for restaurant recommendations in trendy Hauz Khas if you'd prefer to eat out.

Overall

We spent 2 nights at Scarlette and had a very enjoyable time. Our room was beautiful and restful with a lovely terrace to sit out on. It was just as described by the pictures on the website. The whole place was very stylish and had a calm atmosphere. The hotel is in a quiet, safe neighbourhood and made a great first stop on our trip to India. Best of all though were the staff, everyone from the driver who collected us from the airport to the cook/housekeeper were so helpful and friendly. We would definitely recommend to friends and hope to stay again on our next trip.

Loved Scarlette New Delhi - it was an oasis of calm and serenity in bustling Delhi. The decor is gorgeous and the staff couldn't have been more helpful - so pleased I managed to get a trip in the Ambassador whilst I was there as well. I loved the selection of things to buy as well - wanted to buy everything there! Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend.

If only to be there again, in the presence of Nehru and Ghandi, with the ceiling fan whirring away, and the twin lights casting their fantastic patterns on the walls…

Hotel Scarlette was exellent. It made us feel at home in a hard world such as India. Loved it

A gorgeous and calm oasis filled with lots of lovely trinkets. Loved being picked up from the airport in the hotel's vintage gold Ambassador, very cool. The breakfast was great - wish we could have stayed a few more days!

Quiet location, but a way from the tourist sites. Room was very comfortable. Food was awful and there were not any restaurants close by.
