The best time to visit the Hill Country is from September to May, when the humidity is at its lowest, with the hot season (February to May) being the optimum period to seek wildlife at Periyar (many water sources dry up at this time and animals are forced to come to the lake). The cooler mountains provide a welcome respite to the sometimes fierce heat in the build-up to the monsoon. Very heavy monsoon rains fall from June to September.

It can take up to 5 hours to get from the coast to Periyar, as some of the roads are in poor condition. It's best to hire a car and driver, which will save your nerves and allow you to take in the breathtaking scenery. A local driver can also act as an informal tour guide and deflect some of the hassle from hawkers.
