This charming family-oriented eco-farm in the French Pyrenees boasts amazing views, home comforts and lots of outdoor activities

High in the Pyrenees, just outside the quaint village of Corsavy, lies this welcoming mountain retreat, a 16th-century farmhouse that has been transformed by owners Matt and Ali Cooper into a rustic haven for families and lovers of nature. The Pyrenees Mountain Hideaway prides itself on being an eco-friendly farm, striving for self-sufficiency in food and energy. The property, which boasts four gites (sleeping from 2-7) that can be hired separately or together, is home to various animals as well as an expansive organic vegetable garden.

The renovated buildings – all crafted from wood grown and cut on the land – retain the farm's original character and reflect the commitment to sustainable living. But there are modern holiday luxuries to be enjoyed too – from the 6x12m pool and surrounding sundeck, to the wood-fired hot tubs, barbecues, plunge pools and even a sauna. The ethos here is laid back and convivial (there are group dinners every week in the summer) and a chance to get back to nature – strolling along the stony mountain paths, discovering the local wildlife and drinking in those incredible views across the peaks, all the way to the sea on a clear day. Each gite comes with helpful maps with walking and running routes for you. The beaches of the Med are only an hour away too. Return to massages in the yurt and to marvelling at those tremendous views from your terrace. This is the simple life – with a luxury twist.

Highs

  • Extremely family friendly in terms of apartment sizes, bed set-ups and activities, including a playground and donkey rides
  • It's also a great base for couples outside school holidays, for hiking, cycling, photography, wild swimming
  • The large square swimming pool has a beautiful sun deck and amazing views over the mountains
  • There’s an onsite masseuse who offers treatments in a secluded yurt – Thai, healing, detox, energising massages and more
  • Hot on sustainability: organic food grown on site, pigs to aid permaculture, a natural reed-bed septic system, water from the well, and no pesticides or insecticides

Lows

  • Getting away from it all means the area isn’t well served by public transport. A car is a must
  • Some accommodation isn’t suitable for those with mobility issues as there are steps to terraces and hot tubs
  • No pets permitted, as this is a working farm
  • As often with gite bookings, there's an extra charge for post-stay cleaning, as well as use of the sauna if staying in the 2- or 3-bed apartments (it's closed in July-August)
  • Only the two largest apartments have private hot tubs

Best time to go

April-June is the best time if you’re looking for a more active holiday – temperatures are mild and the spring flowers make walking and hiking a real treat. July/August are hotter and more crowded but better for sun-seekers or those planning trips to the Med. September to November is harvest time so foodies and wine lovers will be in their element. The Pyrenees Orientales Hideaways close January-March.

Our top tips

Lovely seaside town Collioure (about an hour away, on the Mediterranean coast) has boutique shops, cafés, some great restaurants, art, culture, history and beaches. Something for everyone.

The medieval town of Villefranche-de-Conflent the other side of Canigou is often voted one of the most beautiful in France and also worth exploring.

The 2-bedroom gite is slightly smaller but has a generous living area, kitchen, dining room, and two ensuite bedrooms. Ideal for families or groups, the larger bedroom accommodates up to three children and an infant, with the flexibility to transform large singles into a super-king double. It also has a breakfast terrace and a sky terrace with a private hot tub.

Eating

The day begins with a breakfast of baked bread and croissants from the village, hand-delivered each morning, or you could have home-grown eggs from the farm (both cost extra). Dinner at the property's garden on Tuesday evenings is a special treat, featuring a two-course vegetarian buffet made from the finest local produce, some grown on-site. Any food waste is collected and composted on-site.

For other meals, you'll be self-catering. On arrival, you'll find olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and some spices, a selection of teas, ground coffee and filters for the coffee machine, and milk. You can buy fresh cheese from the neighbouring sheep cheese farm. Additional groceries can be bought in Arles Sur Tech, and there are more shops further down the valley; a large Intermarché and organic shops are in Ceret, which also has a great Saturday morning market, lovely cafes and restaurants, and is about 30 minutes' drive away.

Nearby Corsavy is small and picturesque but does have a couple of dining options. Le Corstsavi is a campsite with a restaurant that serves pizza and paella (and also has a playground for kids). There’s a creperie, and a restaurant featuring a set menu of five courses (trout, guinea fowl, cepes omelette) that hasn’t changed in 50 years!

For finer dining, jump in the car. There's a host of top-notch restaurants within a half-hour drive, including one or two with Michelin stars. The menus around these parts tend towards a mix of traditional French, Catalan and Mediterranean – though there are also Japanese and Italian eateries to be found.

  • Barbecue
  • Coffee maker
  • Food blender

  • Full kitchen
  • Hob or stove
