The Rebello Hotel & Spa
Porto (Vila Nova de Gaia), Porto, Douro & Minho, Portugal
From the Bello rooftop bar, you can enjoy a rare, panoramic view of both sides of the city – Porto and Gaia including the iconic Dom Luís Bridge – with cocktails and petiscos (small plates) by a Michelin-trained Chef. Downstairs in the signature Pot&Pan restaurant, diners overlook the Douro River, although the interior design puts up a good fight for your attention. Every inch of this beautifully restored former 19th-century factory is creative but not showy, historic without being frozen in time, and refreshingly unpretentious – a lot like Porto itself. The hotel offers 103 suites, three restaurants, and a Roman-inspired spa. It's luxury with soul. Easy and relaxing, with late breakfasts, early checkouts, unstuffy customer service, and homemade pastel de natas hand-delivered to your door. (Yes, please.)
Highs
- That view: The Rebello directly faces Dom Luís Bridge, with Porto and Gaia on either side, and 360º panoramas from the rooftop bar
- The design: housed in an old factory, the interiors mix industrial edge with contemporary comfort and original art. We loved it.
- The top-notch food in both Pot&Pan and Bello
- The well equipped, apartment-style suites are ideal for longer stays
- Set in a peaceful and less touristy location on the Gaia side of the river, just a stroll (or scenic bridge walk) from the historic centre
Lows
- An upmarket hotel like this commands high prices: we thought it worth it considering the interiors, restaurants and spa facilities
- No outdoor pool; the spa includes a small indoor pool that’s perfectly sized (and heated) for a relaxing dip, but it's not big enough to swim laps
- Some suites face the street or courtyard, so if you want uninterrupted river views, it’s worth upgrading
- Kitchenettes come with only basic utensils - let the team know if you need more kit

Rooms
Each of The Rebello’s 103 suites feel more like apartments than hotel rooms – they’re spacious and well-equipped, ranging from open-plan studios to one, two, or three-bed apartments. We were lucky enough to get a riverside room and loved sipping a coffee in the morning on our private balcony overlooking the Douro river. Not all suites have the added bonus of balconies - these are limited and need to be requested in advance.
Design-wise, the rooms are a blend of mid-century touches and contemporary minimalism: walnut cabinetry, polished concrete floors, retro Smeg appliances and lots of earthy, neutral tones. Floor-to-ceiling windows let in loads of natural light, while linen curtains, velvet cushions, and wool blankets bring softness and warmth.
Whichever room you choose, you get a kitchenette with the basics for cooking – plus great coffee, generous snacks (for an extra fee) and a wide selection of teas refreshed daily. You'll have plenty of space to lounge, with comfy chairs and sofas, and smart extras like Marshall speakers and high-speed Wi-Fi.

Eating
Expect good food, good wine – and great service. Michelin-trained chef André Coutinho leads Pot&Pan restaurant, and the Bello rooftop restaurant & bar, specialising in Portuguese classics with a twist.
At Pot&Pan, you get fresh, authentic flavours with a modern edge, served in generous portion sizes that are designed to be shared. We recommend trying the chef’s specials – caramelised beef short ribs or bacalhau, but make sure you order in advance.
Bello serves up creative cocktails and food: small plates with big flavours. This isn't your typical bar snacks kind of offering. We loved the mussels, surf n' turf, and the Basque cheesecake and brownie with yoghurt ice cream is unmissable.
Breakfast is incredibly generous and flexible – available in-room or in the restaurant. Don’t eat too late the night before so you can take full advantage of the warm pastries and breads, regional meat and cheeses, fresh fruit, pancakes, and made-to-order eggs. You won’t leave hungry.
There's also their Lobby Bar, a casual and contemporary hang with soups, salads and sandwiches to munch on alongside drinks. And, across from the Boat Block, there's M'arrecreo Pizzeria serving up authentic Neapolitan pizzas in their woodfired oven, alongside local wine and river views.
