Immerso Hotel

Ericeira, Lisbon Coast, Portugal

A sophisticated, serene, eco-conscious retreat, tucked away in the verdant hills of Ericeira, Portugal’s surf capital

A sophisticated, serene, eco-conscious retreat, tucked away in the verdant hills of Ericeira, Portugal’s surf capital

Ericeira is an unmissable stop on the Lisbon coast, attracting a cosmopolitan crowd of surfers, yogis, foodies and nature lovers. Its wild, rugged beauty, dramatic cliff-top walks, unspoilt beaches, and world surfing reserve status make it a destination unto itself – and it’s less than an hour from Lisbon, so if you like your city break with a side of pristine nature, this place is not to be missed.

Immerso Hotel is truly a hidden gem, discreetly built to blend into the rolling hills around it, which are otherwise home to some scattered farmhouses and the occasional flock of sheep. Everything about this place is designed with utmost sensitivity to the area, and, as the name suggests, it’s about immersing guests in authentic Ericeiran nature and hospitality. From the quietly luxurious hotel design to the spacious rooms with pleasing extra touches (handwoven design accents, eco-friendly toiletries, floor-to-ceiling windows), this is a space to slow down, and reconnect with yourself and nature. Enjoy fine dining, go for a surf, hit the spa, or do absolutely nothing at all except breathe the fresh sea air from the jaw-dropping terraces. This really is a five-star breath of fresh ocean air.

Highs

  • Spectacular ocean views and harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape, plus a stunning outdoor pool with sprawling terraces
  • Plenty of activities: surfing, yoga, walking, nature tours, cycling, and more
  • Elegant, minimalist rooms, each one with a stunning view
  • Foodies will love the choice of culinary experiences, led by renowned Michelin-starred chef Alexandre Silva, in the thoughtfully designed dining areas
  • Commitment to sustainability, from locally sourced cuisine, to the environmentally conscious architecture, solar panels and rainwater harvesting

Lows

  • All this lovely design comes at a high price tag in the peak summer months
  • You'll need transportation to access the nearby attractions, including the beach (a short drive away)
  • Spa facilities are small but you’ve got all the essentials including a sauna and steam room
  • The dining options are on the pricey side
  • Limited on-site entertainment options for children, but babysitting services are available

Best time to go

If you want maximum sunshine and minimum crowds, spring and autumn are the best times to visit. For the warmest weather and most vibey atmosphere, you can’t beat Ericeira in the summertime, but the beaches and restaurants do get busy. Winter time has its own cosy charm when you can enjoy the peace and tranquillity at its best.

Our top tips

Discover Ericeira's surf culture – sign up for lessons, watch the action from the beach, or stroll through the town to soak up the laid-back surf atmosphere.

Rooms

You can’t get a 'bad' room. Choose one of the Nature, Ocean or Inhale rooms, or an ultra-spacious Suite. Each one boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and offers panoramic views of the outside space – your choice of garden or ocean view (as the names imply), and a private balcony.

We stayed in a Nature room and it was generously sized, with a 10sq.m private balcony, and tastefully decorated, with a handmade wooden bed, thoughtfully curated artwork, and impossibly soft linen bedding that made it very hard to tear ourselves away in the morning.

The suites take spaciousness and comfort to another level with an enormous 50sq.m of living space, 39sq.m balconies, and decidedly ‘honeymoon worthy’ free-standing bathtubs with views so you can sea- or star-gaze while you soak. The modern, minimalist aesthetic throughout is perfectly balanced by the earthy colour palette, inspired by the local landscape. All about comfort and simplicity, the feeling in the space is warm and inviting, with a spa-like quality that makes you breathe a little more deeply the minute you set foot in your room or suite.

Features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Bathrobes
  • Coffee / tea making
  • Hairdryer
  • Minibar
  • Safe box
  • Satellite TV
  • Slippers
  • Terrace/balcony
  • Toiletries
  • WiFi

Eating

Alexandre Silva is the Michelin-starred chef behind Immerso’s impressive menu and dining experience. Everything on the menu is organic, locally-sourced (including from the hotel’s own garden), using seasonal ingredients, and regionally inspired, with a contemporary twist. It’s a fresh, straightforward approach to cooking, which they describe as ‘casual, fun and laid back’, and there’s enough choice to satisfy veggies, vegans, pescetarians and meat eaters alike.

Take your pick from dining at Emme restaurant (indoors and on the balcony), head down the hill to Emme on Fire, a sociable bonfire dining experience outdoors, or enjoy a menu of snacks and drinks poolside. You won’t want to miss the fire-cooked oysters, which are a local speciality, or the pica-pau do mar (seasoned seafood mix) which has been on the menu since the hotel opened, due to popular demand. There's also a great selection of craft beers and local wines from small producers in the area, including low intervention, natural wines.

Happily, there’s no skimping on the breakfast menu here either. The buffet is one of the most generous we’ve seen, laden with all kinds of fresh baked breads, croissants, fruit, local cheeses, and cereals, plus there’s a menu of a la carte dishes available to order (quite possibly the best Eggs Benedict we’ve ever tasted.)
