Baobab Suites

Costa Adeje, Tenerife, Spain Book from Book from £199 per night

Maximum relaxation for minimum effort at this suave apartment-hotel overlooking the sea, with private pools, restaurants and a kids’ club
A 4-hour flight from little cold England buys you year-round sunshine and smiles here. Factor in fizz for breakfast, ample space and glorious sea views; the independence of an apartment and the luxury of a hotel… what’s not to like?

Costa Adeje is the newest, most stylish and most peaceful of the resorts on Tenerife's southwest coast. This elevated hotel is part of the resort, its sleek 3 storeys spread across a hillside. It has it all: suites with 1-4 bedrooms and decked balconies, some of which have pools, Jacuzzis or sunken sandpits; 2 main pools; family-friendly eateries; manicures and massages; a sports centre, a playground and a free kids’ club. The design is minimalist and immaculate and staff are unfailingly helpful. A shopping centre and restaurants are a 15-minute stroll down the hill, as is the sandy sweep of Playa del Duque, its tamed waters a haven for families.

  • Perfect for families: just a 20-minute drive from the airport and walking distance from a great family beach and watersports
  • Suites are extremely spacious, and many have private plunge pools and/or Jacuzzis
  • Staff are extremely attentive and everything runs like clockwork
  • Breakfasts are delicious, with a smorgasbord of local and continental favourites and even sparkling wine on offer
  • A free indoor Kids' Club, with creative activities like painting and pizza making, run by lovely staff

  • Due to the staggered layout of the resort, many suites lack privacy, and the plunge pools are often visible to other guests
  • Much bigger than usual i-escape hotels: 125 suites in all, of which we've chosen to feature our favourite 20 or so
  • Some suites are a trek from the facilities
  • It's a short taxi ride (or 15-min uphill walk) back from the beach - but you're given free return taxi vouchers each day
  • The resort can get a little noisy due to children playing
World Favourite Family Hideaway

    Best rooms for families

Boutique and Serenity suites sleep 2-5; Vitality and Indulgence sleep 6-7, while Euphoria sleeps 6-9. All bedrooms can be set up as twins, and baby cots, extra beds and highchairs are all available for free. Many of the attractive decked terraces come with a Jacuzzi or pool, or both. Some pools are raised above the ground, making them ideal for families with small children pottering around. Some decks have sunken sandpits that look like mini beaches.

    Parents should know...

Some suites have decks which lead directly onto the main pools - dangerous if gates are left unlocked and little ones escape. So check when booking if your suite is toddler-proof, as some have unfenced holes in the sandpit and gaps in the fence

High chairs and baby cots

Of the hotel's 125 suites, we've chosen to feature the nicest 20 or so. They range in price, amenities and size, running from 1-4 bedrooms. All are spacious, white and impeccably designed, with superbly equipped kitchens, clean-cut sofas, electronic sun shades and quiet air con. Huge glass doors lead from open-plan living areas to furnished decked terraces, many of which have pools or Jacuzzis - or both! Take your pick. Some also have sunken sandpits; heaven for toddlers. You pay more for a pool than a Jacuzzi but those with pools are divided by low see-through fences, so the pools themselves lack privacy.

Most suites face the ocean and get the morning sun, and also have super views over the mountains. Those at the rear look west towards the road, the sports centre, and the sunsets. Some are a hike from the kids’ club and the restaurants, reachable via several lifts and long concrete passages.

Boutique Suites have 1 bedroom and are spacious (64m2) and light, available with or without Jacuzzis. Serenity Suites have 2 bedrooms, terraces (some have sandpits) and sea views, and some have Jacuzzi and/or private pools. The 3-bedroom options (Indulgence and Vitality Rio) have private pools plus Indulgence has a dramatic rooftop setting and a Jacuzzi. 4-bedroom Euphoria is ideal for 2 families travelling together, with a private rooftop terrace, pool and Jacuzzi.

There are 4 restaurants on site. Bite. Buffet Restaurant offers tasty snacks throughout the day, plus hot food cooked to order at the scattered cooking stations, and also has lunch and dinner menus with plenty of options. Breakfast is served here, and includes sparkling wine and freshly squeezed fruit juices, just-baked breads and pastries, and cooked dishes. Many guests prefer the hamper-to-your-room option, meaning you can eat on your terrace in the morning sun. Order the night before from a fantastic range of breads, cereals, smoked salmon, fruits, pastries, butter and jams, and bacon and eggs that you cook yourselves.

Fuel RestoBar is a bar and restaurant in the Activate sports club, surrounded by sand (meaning kids can play while waiting for food). The BB. Restaurant faces one of the pools, with a wide deck outside and a ship-like feel. On the menu: standard fare including croquettes, salads, stir fries, fish of the day, grilled tenderloin and more. There’s a kids' menu too. For more sophisticated gastronomy there’s formal Sucás restaurant on the lower ground floor. Book a babysitter and 'dine out'.

Suite kitchens are well-equipped for self-catering with fridge freezers, ovens, hobs, microwaves and Nespresso machines, plus dishwashers and a few complimentary drinks. You can shop at a Mercadona a 5-minute taxi ride away, or walk to a (basic) mini market. Alternatively, there are restaurants nearby: Mesón Castellano in Playa de las Americas comes highly recommended by the hotel, while Martini III Torviscas was a firm favourite for us.

  • The walk to the palms and pale sands of Playa del Duque is 15 minutes downhill. You may wish to avoid the walk back up, especially in high heat, so take a taxi (each room gets a free return taxi voucher daily)
  • Playa Fanabe, around the palm-strewn headland, is perfect for paddlers. No waves, no wind, just fine volcanic sands and Balinese beds and umbrellas. You can rent pedalos and jet skis, and pay for banana boat rides
  • Head up to stunning Teide National Park, its highest point crowned by the island’s active volcano, El Teide. It takes an hour to get there, and the route is scenic, the walking magnificent
  • Day trip to Tenerife's beautiful east coast to see Abades (a sleepy fishing village overlooked by an abandoned leper colony), the stunning Anaga mountains, and El Medano (the best natural beach on Tenerife)
  • Baobab's 'Experience Centre' can arrange paragliding, wine tasting at local vineyards, night photography at the volcanic sites, and lava tube visits (Cueva del Viento was formed 27,000 years ago, and is the longest lava tube in Europe)
  • Back home for me-time: a manicure, pedicure, facial and massage in Baobab Wellness; lazy laps in the pools
  • Play beach volley and paddle tennis at Activate Sports Club, which has an open-air gym; enjoy Pilates, yoga and spinning classes or attend free fitness sessions

Best Time to go

The joy of Tenerife's southwest coast is that it’s warm and sunny all year round. With kids under school age, you’re spoiled for choice. March and November are great times to visit, warm (19-22C) but not overly so, and with few crowds. July-September can be scorchingly hot, though the suites are air-conditioned. Winters (December-February) are cool at 13-18C, but it’s still likely to be sunny.

Our Top Tips

The fishing village of La Caleta is 2km away for more choice of restaurants, including family-run Masia del Mar for good seafood and Martini III Torviscas for lovely waterfront views.

Before arriving I was a bit dubious about staying in Tenerife as I didn't want a 'package holiday' experience. Baobab Suites is a million miles from package holiday Tenerife although the beaches and bars and banana boats etc are within walking distance if you fancy that. We stayed in a 2 bed suite with a hot tub/jacuzzi. This was perfect for us as we had a safe beach area for our three small children to play in and we used the hot tub as a mini ( and warm) swimming pool. The children would have been happy there all day! The suite was big, white and just like the description - the worries about being overlooked were not a problem.
The main pool was warm enough for children given the hot hot weather ( 25 -30 degrees every day) and without children (and short attention spans) it would be a perfect lounging spot all day with a handy bar next to it!
There were lots of families at Baobab, but the fact most people had their own pools and breakfast could be served in your suite meant the 'bustle' of other people's children was non existent. Everywhere was fairly serene but at the same time very welcoming.
Breakfast served in the ground floor was excellent and a huge variety of food on offer. Breakfast in your room was generous and handy but more limited in range. Room service food overall wasn't great as the menu was limited to sandwiches and burgers and salads but these were not great quality. On the other hand, the service overall was excellent - fast and smiley and discreet.

We used the Saplings children club quite a bit although we don't usually use kid's clubs. You can pop in with your children and stay while they play and there are lots and lots of toys in a big airy space so my 1, 4 and 6 year old happily played for hours. We also left the elder two on their request to make Easter bags etc and you have to book the children in for this but during Easter this wasn't busy. The staff here were really excellent and it felt very safe but relaxed.

We hired a car ( essential!) and visited Teide ( the volcano) as well as the mountains for a walk in the pine forests. The queues for the cable car for Teide build up quickly so good to get there early. We also visited the north and the yellow sandy beaches of Santa Cruz - a lovely change from the black volcanic sand but not worth the trek with children. The children said their favourite bits were 'swimming in the sea' 'Saplings' and 'eating mashed potato' ( they liked the room service food!) Apart from that, we hung out at the hotel, and did very little - bliss.

We loved the service, the room cleaning was impeccable and the free taxi to and from the beach was great. The sand by the pool was a great idea for kids. I felt they could do with an outdoor children's play area - some slides, swings etc. I also thought the kids club could allow kids below 4. Overall I felt it was a hotel which provided for children, rather than a hotel specifically catering for children.

I thought Baobab Suites was lovely. It's very big - we would normally stay somewhere smaller and more personal - but they've managed to create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. It was handy having an apartment with a kitchen as well as having access to all the facilities of the hotel. Our children loved it and there was a lot for them to do.

For the price you expect very high standards. Some staff were lovely - at breakfast, kids club all helpful and smiling. However, it took us 2 hours to get into our room. We had issues with parking the car and had to wait a long time for the luggage trolley to take our luggage. We'd been travelling since 5am and the process was far too lengthly. I'm afraid this didn't quite match up to other family friendly hotels we have stayed at.
